Scholes sees his role as pundit rather as one of professional moaner rather than than intelligent analyst. I have seen him 3 times: the first he got stuck into his own club, the second it was Arsenal's turn and now he's turned his smug sneer on City, our stadium and our fans. He intended to be offensive and he succeeded. What he said, though, was powder puff stuff and only gave succour to those fearful of City and our future.
I found the way Scholes said what he said offensive, but what he said was hardly new or significant. There are problems with the atmosphere and numbers at CL matches. I admit I'm part of the problem. There are too many matches, they're too expensive, increasingly they're against teams we play as regularly as we play PL teams and the matches are so tactical that you never know whether you've got a good, bad or indifferent result. And all this in a tournament where the rules have been rigged by a hated Frenchmen, so that a predictable coterie of clubs are likely to win the trophy time and again, while they and their mates get richer and richer. Group of Death again? What a surprise! I'd rather by far that we won the PL than the CL. That might change in years to come, but not just yet. And I'd rather pay to watch Sheffield Wednesday in the C1C and Watford in the FAC for £25 than Roma for £40.
So when Scholes babbles on I know that he's not lying, and I hope I soon change my attitude, but I know that while Scholes thinks he's having a good laugh at my club's expense, the Sheikh has people running the club, who are doing things that really will stuff his words down his sneering mouth, and bring me cheering to a capacity 62000 crowd at a rocking Etihad to cheer the team all the way to the final and the trophy. They've moved several mountains already, and this one will have its turn.
