School kids protest climate change

I did say there was more than a hint of sarcasm in my reply but don’t you feel there is also a hell of a lot of truth in it as well?

I’ve literally spent the evening going around the house turning off lights, un watched TV sets and games consoles and I will guess I’m not alone in that either.

Spot on. Can you imagine saying "right we'll do our bit for the environment like you want, go and put a jumper on cos the heatings going off, youre walking to school tomorrow and theres no TV or computer games we are playing board games" ??? I guarantee that would cause a bigger walk out.

My kids are probably just as guilty as most of leaving their devices switched on, but gradually I think the message is getting through. I certainly remind them often enough.

I do genuinely think that’s largely forgetfulness on their behalf though. It’s our role as parents to remind them of their responsibilities. Feels incredibly cynical and curmudgeonly though to have a go at young kids who are actively protesting at something so important. You seem to be implying they’re hypocrites, but they’re kids ffs!

But they are kids who would probably baulk at actually making difficult changes to their own lives to help the environment. They are the generation that are more attached to gadgets and comfort than any of those before them. So it is more than a bit audacious of them to lecture us about the impact of what we are doing. At least until they come out of their own addictions.

Politicised kids who are demanding, rightfully, to be heard.

It’s only right then to expect them to know exactly what it is they want to happen and ask if they too are prepared to give up the very things they love the most and revolve their lives around.

Yet again we have a thread on here where the gammons are being blamed yet it’s the generation that protested today that is hungry for the tech that is quickly becoming the biggest impactor on the environment.

If they where in school they might have learnt that ;-)

End of thread.

With the greatest respect, you’re making some fairly big generalisations there (and as a Brexiteer yourself, I know you’re not so keen on those). What evidence do you have that those kids protesting are “audacious” or would “baulk at changes”?

Quite simply because I don't see any of them making any.

And what the hell this has to do with Brexit is a bit beyond me ?

Listening to the interviews today you’d realise they know exactly what they want.

Rather than giving them opposition from behind, how about having a go at the pathetic government policy on climate change.

I don’t know exactly how old you are but unless you’re 60+ this could well kill you too.

Haha, tbf it is quintessentially “gammon” to blame the kids for the environmental issues we face today ;)

Fair enough but these kids have decided to do something, we just offer them platitudes. Plus if governments decide to use tech, they’ll be costs and we’ll complain.

You'd be wrong to perceive it like that. Crucially witholding the tech is a means to power and influence.

You mean they're not responsible for the excesses of the last century and government environmental policy in the present day? 'Kinell.

But you are not answering the questions that are being posed of you Ric. If they are so keen on the environment why wont they change their own behaviours first ? That would at least give them a bit of credibility. They wont because it would be far too uncomfortable for them.

How do you know the kids protesting today won’t change their behaviours?

Youre ad hominen remark is irrelevant, simply because it steps besides the actual issue. So who is it then who has the right to protest about the enviroment, only the homeless and impoverished?

Because they are walking around cities glued to their mobiles with earphones in, using every form of social media available, jumping in Ubers, getting lifts here there and everywhere and taking advantage of every comfort and convenience they can do, for which I don't blame them, but theres absolutely no way Ill be lectured by them until that changes

People will talk you down if you try to ignore the actual important issue by shooting the messenger, and with good cause.

Nonsense. Those who have the right to protest are those who are walking the walk. You simply cant protest about how others are living if you are living the same or worse. Ridiculous.
