Scottish Independence

They might they also might not much has changed since last time. Plus a fair chunk of those against independence last time in Shetland were more interested in independence than remaining in the UK. Some even want to be Norwegian.

i love it when people make arguements about things they haven't got a bloody clue about. Two articles online, and they know everything they need to about orkney and shetland. it is a complete waste of time even acknowledging, that that nuances exist.

Certainly is somewhat entertaining to read, (without a hint of sarcasm), even if it is purelily said out of the brexit hyperbole devil's advocate stance. Things must be pretty boring on that thread to try regurgitate it in any given topic.

Trust me friend, none of that matters - separation from the UK just ain't gonna happen while their resident population remains sentient. The diaspora are the ones in dreamland.

I doubt the diaspora would have a say in it, didn't the last time. You do have a point, however, with your first sentence, imho.

You haven’t seen the polling or heard the sentiments expressed in the coffee shops then. If there was a referendum tomorrow it would be very close.
If under a certain set of circumstances in 12 / 18 months time then there is a chance it happens.
One thing I have noticed the most ‘ certain’ posts come from those living in England. The posts from those of us living in Scotland whether English or Scottish are much more open to the possibility whether we are convinced yet or not. I’m not fully convinced yet but personally am currently about 50/50. In the last referendum I’d put my decision to vote no at about 60/40. Not a lot different to the polling figures then and now as it happens.

I had a catch-up with a good friend a couple of weeks ago, big big No guy. he said he was now an unashamed yes, whenever the next one comes along, as was his whole family now. They are all life long tory voters as well, so it isn't a reaction to the last GE, nor was he ever a particular europhile.
If changes in attitudes like that, in such a short timeframe, that i would consider absolutely unthinkable, are happening; who can really predict/say anything with such apparent certainty?

If you've ever been to the Shetlands ..youll find it aligns itself with the Finnish countries rather than the UK.

Not quite. And you'd get chucked off a cliff if you called it 'the Shetlands', or 'the Orkneys' up there.

But the wind would blow you right back on, so you'd be ok, with a lesson learned.

The beaker people are accredited for building stonehenge, no doubt that theory will change again as they always do. Whose to say the Orkney people aren't direct ancestors to the beaker people?

Whichever way it worked what they built on the Isles was and is an achievement, maybe the Orkneys will finally get their independence from Scotland ;)

they might be, although the monuments mentioned above in Orkney predate Stonehenge significantly, so the theory is an interesting one, if at all related. it is fascinating stuff, either way.

My fishing club are mainly ex bankers and have fairly conservative with a small c, values and politics. At the last ref I would say 80% were definite no. Now I would put it closer to 30% and even they are more open to the notion. Views have been changed by a combination of things, Brexit obviously, Tory behaviour, Johnson, promises made and broken.... it might not happen in a couple of years but if this trajectory continues, it will happen.

Scotland is a recognised country. The Northern Isles are not. Would you advocate Cornwall having the right to holding a referendum on independence? Or London becoming a seperate City State?
If Cornwall left and St.Martin's, St.agnes and St.Mary's decided we want to join England or Ireland for that matter. Would you let them?
That's just Scilly.

Coats on.
