Seat Counters 25/26

We regularly get 52,000+ in league games, we had that against Exeter and probably will against Swindon/Salford. Most champions league games are around 50k - with knockouts being at full capacity.

47,500 is too small for us. But 61,000 is definitely too big.

We’ll be like West Ham I think, regularly getting around 55,000-58,000 next season, with empties scattered around.

It’s these midweek cup games that will be embarrassing and I’m fearful for the Newcastle game.

Worth noting that we rarely filled the SS expansion for cup games when it first opened. We’d get like 42k in a 54k capacity.

Agree 100%

I remember listening to Chris Bird at a Supporters Club meeting circa 2001, when we were still at Maine Road, but had agreed in principle to move into the new stadium after the Commonwealth Games etc

Somebody queried if the new 47,000 capacity would be big enough and Bird made the quite reasonable point that despite some huge individual attendances in the 1930s, City had never averaged 47,000.

Obviously nobody could have envisaged such a huge transformation, but 25 years later we get ridiculed for recording an attendance of "only" 47,000

The next step was 54,000, and despite all the moaning and groaning (some of it justified) we normally sellout

Yes,.the prices should be more flexible and competitive, but not so cheap that some cup scheme members can just let their account be debited without any intention of attending

Also, the whole ticket buying process should be slicker and easier to navigate for neutrals, and especially.the "occasional" visitors, who should be welcomed with open arms by the regulars and not viewed with disdain and snobbery.

However once the capacity is increased to 60,000 we need to overcome this fear of ridicule and just accept that we'll only sellout for certain games and probably average "only" 57000

It's only going in one direction and with our school playground demographic rapidly increasing from the bad old days of the 90s and 00s it will undoubtedly continue
Great post mate

Not sure about Newcastle. It may not sell out but there are two weeks to go and it is already over 40,000. I think it will be close to 50,000. Let's see. The League Cup is a priorty this season given how inconsistent we are. It may be Pep's last Wembley final if we get through. To be fair City fans often turn up at the last minute (and leave early). Perhaps it's in our DNA.
Sales look to be slowing though don’t they? Appreciate there’s time left but based on previous games we should be further along. Now is the time to put on general sale, allow people a chance to plan to attend.

Something else that has only just occurred to me.

During the last season at Maine Road, City's average attendance was roughly 34,000 less than United's

However by next season the gap will be down to roughly 17,000 with a far more modern stadium and a younger demographic

Yes, the club has made some poor calls, but it's not all doom and gloom.

Sorry this is rubbish. City have always had a big, mostly working class, fanbase. When I started supporting us in the 1960s we regularly attracted over 60,000 for the biggest games and now we are averaging over 50,000 and have done for years. I don't know where you are based but here in Northern England the economy and infrastucture is crumbling. A lot of people are struggling financially. The cost of attending matches (not just ticket prices) is the biggest factor. If we charged £10 a ticket we could sell out 70,000 every week easily. I am hoping that the new larger capacity will create a downward pressure on ticket prices so some of the 250,000 local people who turned out for our treble parade in the rain can get to a few matches. They certainly deserve it.
Great post, consider myself well and truly bollocked,I definitely think I went over the top…..been city since 77,funny(well not funny, fucking annoying)thing is me and my brother used to go every home game right up to to 2001 travelling from Clayton to Moss side….then we fucking moved to Eastlands, litrally a ten minute walk, only problem was we’d moved to North Wales in 2001….gutted.

Fair enough pal. We all want City to do well. It just drives me mad when people (not you) have a go at our fanbase. The reality is we have been one of the best supported clubs in the country for more than 100 years. Almost always in the top five or six clubs. Of course we don't have the global numbers of United, Liverpool, and even Arsenal but somehow it is used as a stick to beat us with. I am optimistic and think we will see lower ticket prices (perhaps selective for certain games) next season and we will fill the full capacity.. In fact I think, with the state of the economy, all clubs will have to do the same.

One thing people aren’t considering is we’ve had six home games scheduled this month with 3 to play before the Newcastle game! If I wasn’t on the cup scheme I definitely wouldn’t have bought tickets yet until pay day at least! Can’t speak for anyone else but not having a pot to piss in after Christmas is a common trait.

Flat is what you make it. If you’re going in expecting a flat atmosphere well it’s one you will get…
