Self-employed & Coronavirus

Has anyone had any dealings with the banks for the business interruption loans?
I’ve paid all my staff In full for last week & have enough for next weeks wages ( £10k per week roughy) but unless we get some cash in will be struggling from then on
The portal for furlough isn’t online yet to claim so that’s no help yet and that sounds like a month away at least before anything will be coming through

Can a construction worker on CIS self isolate from the company they are working for and if they act alone will they then qualify for furlough relief fund of 80% in June. Does a self employed CIS worker have to inform the tax office of their intentions to benefit from this fund or is it all done automatically. A lot of conflicting information on the web. The reason for self isolation is a lack of controlled self distance protection for the workforce and being asked to travel to sites together in a van. Also a partner who has symptoms.

If he lives with his partner who has symptoms he should self isolate for 14 days.
While he’s doing that he can phone the acas helpline for advice and any questions he has.
CIS, umbrella companies, bogus self employment etc are a minefield atm and I think there will be changes in the near future after all the nonsense they create.
People working for the same company for years and not an employee is bullshit imo.
He’ll probably have to answer a load of questions before they can advise him what he’s entitled to, but he doesn’t have to give any personal info iirc.
He could also ask about the unsafe working conditions.
Good luck.

If you're on CIS, as you state you're not an employee therefore you are not eligible for the Job Retention Scheme.

It doesn't matter if you self-isolate of your own accord or if your Contactor stops all work. Nobody is entitled to anything form their Contractor.

Providing you've submitted SA tax returns for the last 3 years HMRC should be in touch soon to let you know that you'll receive payments based on these returns. You'll get these whether you've stopped working or not.

As you may know, so-called IR35 reform was about to happen, with the intention of weeding out most of the (admittedly widespread) dubious practice. The pandemic brought about a postponement.

For the record, plenty of owner-directors are perfectly legit. Bona fide consultants tend to set up as limited companies because it lends gravitas, as much as any tax considerations. They had little to fear from IR35 reform other than the bureaucracy it would impose on client companies carrying out verification.

Directors won’t attract much sympathy but are actually a group who benefit less than almost anybody else from the emergency support measures.

Your last paragraph..
How and why should SE receive payments when they’ve been working . It doesn’t make sense .. Even Martin Lewis said SE can work & still get the grant

Whether the self-employed should get this help and be able to carry on working & earning is questionable but I don't think there's any way of forcing them not to work (short of a FULL lock-down of society).

This is particularly the case when you consider that if you're an employee who's been furloughed you cannot do any work at all and there's still certain people working who can't get any help at all.

It has always been a very high risk approach. I work in a field where many people go down the contractor route. It always astounded me how little people thought about what they were doing. I had a conversation with a girl (late 20's) who thought it was great that she was earning over £50k a year. I walked her through what she didnt have (paid holiday, pension, job security etc) and it was like it had never occurred to her. The alarming thing was she was working in a role that was a clear dead end to me (brexit related - closing down EU branches of a uk firm) yet she had found a dodgy accountant who was ensuring she paid no tax but also looking to get her a mortgage based on 100% of her rate. She though this was great.

That was the point of contention I referred to, the government payments in June based on declared income over a 3 year average. Son in law has been in construction for 25 years and is paid through the CIS scheme with 20% deduction at source. So the government will automatically contact him and make payments of 80% regardless of working or not. Thanks very much for the info and appreciated.
