Sergio Agüero | Manchester City's All Time Top Goalscorer

It's interesting to look at the stats.

Last Season
% Shots on Target / % Shots scored
Aguero 63% / 17.8%
Salah 71% / 16%
Kane 69% / 16.7%
Aubameyang 66% / 23.4%
Mane 61% / 25.2%
Vardy 63% / 22.8%
Sterling 79% / 22%
Firmino 71% / 16%
Jesus 72% / 16.3%

This Season
% Shots on Target / % Shots scored
Aguero 55% / 22.5%
Salah 78% / 15%
Kane 57% / 20%
Aubameyang 75% / 25%
Mane 54% / 25%
Vardy 72% / 44%
Sterling 70% / 18.9%
Firmino 76% / 8.1%
Abraham 68% / 26.3%
Jesus 63% / 11%

Obviously this doesn't tell you the whole story. For a start, the players with very good shooting accuracy tend to have fewer shots, suggesting that perhaps they only shoot in particular situations, whereas the more prolific goalscorers are more likely to shoot in difficult circumstances. It also doesn't take into account blocked shots, so a player blasting it on target into a crowd of players is counted the same as someone deftly lifting it over the keeper. And obviously there haven't been many games this season to give an accurate comparison, but it does look like all of our goalscorers are performing worse in front of goal than last season purely in terms of shooting accuracy, but Aguero is actually scoring more often from his shots. Vardy has been one of the most clinical strikers in the league for a while now, but this may be due to the sort of goals he scores, where he's far more likely to clean through on goal than someone like Aguero.

Personally I'd say that the service to Aguero hasn't exactly been great in recent weeks. There have been a few examples where he's made a great run and the ball hasn't quite been accurate enough.

certainly highlights where Jesus is lacking this season that’s for sure.

Metal shield is on, so let's go...

Kun needs 10 chances to score one these days. I don't care about 9 scored already, with the amount of chances created for him, it's very expected and several players in much weaker teams have similar numbers.

We need top striker next year as Jesus is not great finisher and brings very weak competition and answer to Aguero's periods of bad scoring form.

We're missing way too many top chances. With the amount of them created, we can beat most of the sides, but when big games come, it becomes a big problem.
These days ? Big games ? He didn’t need ten chances when he scored an incredible goal to see us on the road to beating these cvnts in January. He has the hardest job on the pitch and he’s still brilliant at it.

We’re all disappointed but let’s keep a sense of perspective

I said these days, I didn't say January. He is very wasteful this season.

Not just him though. We're missing some spectacular chances regularly.

I assumed you didn’t think he’d deteriorated noticeably since January. When he set a new record for scoring in consecutive games at the start of a season did you think he was wasteful ? When that stat went around the media recently about him scoring (something like, I can’t remember exactly) 9 goals from 10 shots at goal were you shaking your head thinking no he’s been wasteful this season ?

The truthful answer to both those questions is no. One game where he misses a few chances doesn’t make him a wasteful striker.

I think he is wasteful since September or so, yes. He scored lot of goals in first 4-5 games, had hat trick and brace in two games and that's it. After that, he was very average and wasteful.

Scored a brace against Soton and Atalanta in October but that’s irrelevant as is your point about his relatively barren run since mid Sept. We judge a player and a team based on performances over the course of a season not just on a select sample of games. He’ll score 25 goals this season as he usually does. If that’s wasteful find me another wasteful striker to replace him.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. He scored in 3 of his last 10 matches in all competitions. For ex. fucking Rashford scored in 6, just as Kane did. Sterling, Vardy and Mane scored in 5. Salah, Pulisic and Aubameyang in 4, Abraham in 3. And they are all playing in far less creative teams and apart from Mane and Salah who's team has a chance, none of them plays in a team that is targeting a glory in biggest competitions.

Aguero is not alone, we're generally as a team very wasteful and that xG thing shows we're the most wasteful in the league and should have been top if we're not serial "missers". We're not winning either Cl or PL this season if that is not quickly overturned and we become more clinical.

He’s scored in 3 of the last 4 games he’s started but we can trot out meaningless stats back n forth all night. It’s irrelevant how many goals various flavour of the month strikers have scored in the last 10 games. You judge them over a season. How you can even mention Rashford or Tami in the same breath as Sergio amazes me. He guarantees us 20+ goals a season and that means he’s absolutely fucking priceless. Are you not aware that strikers have bad runs where they don’t score for a few games ? So he’s gone 2 games without scoring - big deal.

If there were a prize for biggest knee jerk reaction on this forum you’d be in contention pal.
