Serie A

If things would have fallen slightly differently Milan would have been deservedly 3-0 up against United in the first leg! that's not shit or defensive! Juve completely outplayed Fulham at Turin, it could have been 5-1! that's not shit or defensive! [they just both didn't turn up for the 2nd legs, okay that is shit, but it's only one-off games!]

After a fairly even 1st leg that Inter just about deserved to edge a lead, Inter completely outplayed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - albeit without (IMO) one of the top 3 players in the world in Essien (I think he is absolutely brilliant!) - yet they still did it away at a ground where their oppo' have only lost 5 games in about 8 years!

Fiore were really unlucky - and have some fantastic players (Jovetic - GET HIM SIGNED!!!!!!!!) - and they completely outplayed Liverpool home and away in the group stages, something we didn't do at all and we played them twice within their poor run!! and Fiore were really unlucky to go out to Bayern Munich as they definately matched them and it could have been very different if it wasn't for them being cheated out if a very good away draw in the 1st leg (that offside goal for Bayern!) - that's not shit or defensive neither!

The Italian league is definately nowhere near the quality it was in the 80's and 90's, I'm not suggesting that for one minute! but it's certainly not shit! it can be extremely boring but there are some really good teams and excellent players!

I actually think our league is way overrated! look past the top 3 and there are about 5 other okay teams! then the other 12 are absolutely shit and play horrendously shocking football! Stoke v Blackburn would send Malaga and Gijon supporters to tears!

On a side note; have you seen the French league table? Marseille are 6th and are only 3 points off the top of the league! what an end to the season that's gonna be!!

Did you actually watched the games??
Did you read the papers the following day??
Inter was far the best team over the 2 legs!

Were Chelsea screwed in the first leg with dodgy refereeing decisions again? That would have made the 2nd leg a completely different game

what about Lavezzi, Hamsik and co at napoli? giovinco, pazzini, santacroce, motta, chiellini. Serie A will always be a good league with some very talented players
Napoli are 8th in Serie A, so how good are the likes of Lavezzi, Santacroce and Hamsik? C'mon, Juve are 5th and just got thumped off a middle of the road Prem team in Fulham. If you take into account the next level of team up in the prem which is ourselves, Liverpool, Everton, Villa, Spurs, and then the top 3 after that, when was the last time you could say the top 8 in England are better than all the teams in Italy bar the Champions?

I'd even say the likes of Bayern, Schalke, Leverkusen, Hamburg, Werder and maybe even Wolfsburg are better than all the teams in Serie A apart from Inter.

That is the point im trying to make, the decline of Italian football. No more is it the must tune in on a Sunday.

Look at the players we've had recently from Serie A, Corradi and Bianchi. Bianchi was one of Serie A's top goalscorers the season before. So what went wrong with that?

Come on mate, don't be like some of the un-informed people who look at things from the outside but not know whats really is happening!!

Serie A clubs have spent in the past 3 seasons more than any league bar "the premier league" do you know that? Am not making this up, just enter any website that shows how much each league have spent and you'll see the numbers you're self. Last season alone serie A clubs "in general" have spent "twice" what the bundesliga clubs have spent in the market.

As for the spanish la liga, other than Real and Barca the rest of the league is actually is in a really bad shape (there is a 20 points gap between madrid/barca and the 3rd team on the table!!)

Both Juve and milan are having troubles in the past few years and its down to the calciopoli that really hit those two clubs hard (specially Juve). Just one week before the fulham-juve game Juve played Siena (a team that is at the bottom of the league) in turin. Juve went 3-0 up in the first few minutes and ended up drawing with them 3-3 at the end of the game at home.

Most people here don't know that Juve were missing "8" players in the fulham game. Did you know that Juve played that game with only "one" center back in the team and that was cannavaro!! When he was sent off, they had to play with two right backs (zebina + grygera) as center backs a position those two "never" played in.

Their 1st goalkeeper buffon was injured, their 2nd goalkeeper "manninger" was injured too so they had to play with their 3rd keeper "chiemeni" the guy is almost 40 and never played not a "single" game this season.

Anyone can look at a result and throw a conclusion but you should look at really what happened and the circumstances in that game.

Don't forget Fulham beat United by three goals at home! does that make them on a parr with teams in the Russian Div1?

Hamsik will not be in Napoli for long. Destined for the very top that lad. You can't write individual players off because of the team they play for, especially so early in their career.

On the wider discussion, pretty much all of the players I would like us to sign this summer are in Italy at the moment.

Hamsik is one. De Rossi tops my list. Chiellini, Maicon, Cambiasso. All would massively improve us and push us on to the next level. Pazzini, Zarate, Montolivo would all be worth a punt. Stankovich is someone I think would also do very well in the Premiership. And if we are going to leave Hart on loan at Birmingham I would look at reviving our interest in Amelia to put pressure on Given (I think we were linked with him under Sven weren't we?), especially if we do get 4th.

Sign a couple of those and Higuain (or similar) and I think we would be in with a shot of winning the whole thing next year.

Not to sure about that comment about the italian league been on par with the russian league. Are italian football stadiums as empty on matchdays as the russian league.

It doesn't matter what the stadiums are holding, its a matter of how the teams are performing, and there really isn't to much difference between the quality. To be honest, the Russian league is actually more of a pleasure to watch than the boring Serie A.

Russia will be a serious threat to European and World honours in about 5 years. They have some seriously gifted youngsters coming through in abundance now. We've all heard about Dzagoev, Bukharov, and Akinfeev. But what people dont know is the players coming through, and their is loads of them. Here are a few to watch out for;

Georgi Schennikov - CSKA
Maksim Kanunnikov - Zenit
Yevgeni Makeyev - Spartak
Sergei Parshivlyuk - Spartak
Nika Piliyev - CSKA
Pavel Yakolev - Spartak
Aleksandr Kokorin - Dynamo
Oleg Shalayev - Nalchik

With players like Krasic, Necid, Welliton, Berezutskiy brothers, Semak etc to learn from, the Russian league is slowly starting to take off.

Also remember the wealth involved at alot of these clubs. Its a big factor for getting decent names and signing them to high wages.

Agree with what you're saying about the Russian League, its a very good, interesting League. I would also add Honda to that list of players too.

Spartak Moscow have some good young players coming through, look out for Zhano Ananidze, he's been described as the "new Georgi Kinkladze".

Know all about the young 17 year old after seeing him late in the Russian League last season. I didn't add him to the list of younsters as i was trying to keep them Russian, but you're right he is a talent.

On the topic of Serie A, did anyone see the Palermo vs Inter game last night? Crap football, slow game, very defensive and some of the decision making from some of the players was absolutely shocking.

From watching plenty of European football over the years it is now plainly obvious that Serie A is on a downward spiral.

United easily beat Milan
Fulham's win over Juventus

Those are just a couple of results, and you can even question Chelsea's 2 legs over Inter, especially some dodgy decision's.

Im now of the opinion that the Bundesliga is now at a higher standard than Serie A and quite possibly the Russian league is on a par with the Italian game.

So where does this leave Italian football? Has the negativity and defensive style finally caught up with them? Surely players like Maicon, Pato, Diego, Cambiasso, Hamsik, Kjaer, Zapata, etc would excel in other leagues?

I for one hope we dont raid Italy in the summer, unless we are signing young gifted lads with serious potential. I'd like all our efforts to be made on players from the Premiership, La Liga and as already mentioned the Bundesliga.

Inter over Chelsea... oh hang on.

-- Sun Mar 21, 2010 12:56 pm --
