Seventeen years ago today...

Remember the day fondly. It was a great day out in York, only spoiled by the footballing result but in those days that never really was much of an issue. Four of us got there early and had an all-dayer there was a boozer in the centre selling cocktails at half price and we had a great time.

Although we lost and slumped to the worst position in our history, I thought we played well and in fact I remember the game as the one in which we showed the first signs of a recovery in form. Craig Russell played well and overall we didn't deserve to lose. We were miles better than the game before against Bristol Rovers.

After the game, more cocktails and a boozy train back home. Happy days ! Though I do remember the was a heavy police presence at the station and was told about some trouble with Leeds fans travelling back from an away game. I always look out for York away when there is a cup draw because I would love to go back there.

I know it's an in-joke with City fans and in particular bluemoon about this game but there are loads more games worthy of being used as an indication of loyal support than that one.

I wasn't there. I've always gone against the grain.

Well done to all those liars that were though.

Thanks ;)

Although it was the lowest ebb in our history in terms of our league position, it didn't actually feel that bad. We had a cracking day and evening on the lash, getting asked to leave one pub for swearing (!), went in a nightclub called Toffs (your kind of place mate if only because of the name lol), and finished the night off with a couple of scoops in the hotel bar near the racecourse.

All in all, a great day out apart from the result. I did every away game in the league that season and every trip was an event in itself. Did most games on the coach with the Levenshulme blues and was always a blast. Instead of York, the lowest ebb for me that season was Lincoln away. I couldn't get away early enough from work to travel on the Levenshulme coach so had to make do with the official supporters coach from Maine Road. Fuck me, what a barrel of laughs that was. No beer allowed (obviously) and having to listen to Radio 4 all the way to Lincoln. I was hoping to get there in time to at least grab a couple of pints in a pub but the horrendous traffic put paid to that. What followed was a miserable 2-1 defeat and the thought of an equally miserable journey home on that fucking coach. Luckily, there was a spare seat on the Leve coach which made the journey home more bearable.

Spot on mate. I've just posted something similar.

Thanks ;)

Lincoln away was also my low point as a City fan. I drove away wondering when this hell I'd entered was going to end.

York away is a trip I'd completely love to happen again. Partly because it would give a sense of perspective to the journey we've been on, but also because it's one of the greatest cities in the world with some truly great pubs. One of the truly epic away trips in this country.

You're right Frank.

The crowd and team came together as one in the second half.....the atmosphere was one of the best ever at Maine Road .....an absolute cacophony of noise. Bedlam when Gareth scored the winner late on.

The # Togetherness twixt fans and players created a momentum that carried us through the next two seasons and back to back promotions.

A great time for true fans.

I was there, with my 8 year old son, couldn't get tickets for the away end so rang York City saying I wanted to 'do the 92' and waited for them to have a big game before visiting their stadium, with my southern accent, I got away with it.
I ended up being sat in front of the radio/media area and was asked on numerous occasions to quieten down.

Thanks ;)

We had some real fun that season made all the better by the madness that was Bill Black.
Remember the day we dropped into that division and I told you we were two years away from the Prem and that we had to ensure we went to every game in the third division as we would never be there again, granted it was just as likely we went out of business if we didn't come straight Back up.
Really helped my ground count as well
Ps the game I would use to prove your Blue credentials would be Colchester away BTW, less tickets and 6pm saturday KO one of the very first ppv so on tv aswell
We changed ends that night as we got tickets in the other end off Paul Dickov

Ha ha, I remember that day we got relegated at Stoke. Think you also said you weren't too bothered as there wasn't much difference between being 1 or 2 divisions away from the Premier League.

You could write a book about the Leve Blues trips that season in the third tier. Millwall away was a right laugh - remember Bill Black thinking we'd lost 2-1 as he didn't realise they'd had a goal disallowed and wondering why we were so ecstatic about Bradbury's last minute equaliser? And before the game when the coach was being escorted to the ground and that double decker bus pulled alongside with some bloke who was at least in his 70's with a Millwall shirt on giving us a load of abuse.

The weekender in Bournemouth was an obvious highlight - set off at 9AM the day BEFORE the match, Johnny Maher pissed by 10AM and before we even got to the Air Balloom, yet was still going strong 12 hours later. The hotel we stayed in which should've been condemned years previously and featured on Holidays From Hell a couple of years later because a load of OAPs went down with food poisoning. The 2 random Bristol Rovers fans staying there and us drowning out their anti-Goater songs at daft o'clock in the morning in the hotel bar. Shez and Roger chanting "You don't know what you're doing" in the hotel on the Saturday evening as an ode to the ref who had given Horlock a 2nd yellow for aggressive walking earlier in the day. Happy days lol.

That Colchester game was equally memorable. Another stupidly early start but not before we'd had a couple in the Wheatsheaf first. Our mini-bus meeting up with the main Leve coach at a pub in the middle of nowhere en route. Props to the mini-bus driver for ensuring a smooth journey there and back ;) Cracking atmosphere in that shallow terrace behind the goal and a great view of Goater's volley, then back on the lash afterwards and ending up in a nightclub in the middle of a housing estate!

I remember it well
I was eleven years old and my dad got us tickets in the main stand in the York end, he always did if he had a contact there
And he embarrassed me when he jumped up screaming and waving his arms when we equalised

We went to 16 away games together that year, with the best being Northmapton, the first time I'd seen city fans be so crazy, I think they were the Moston Blues, Colchester and the botulism burgers and Bournemouth and Horlocks's agressive walk.
Brilliant year even though he wouldn't take me to Milwall.
Got knocked flying by the cops at Wigan in the semi with no apologies.
