Sheffield United (H) - Post-Match Thread

Yeah Foden or De Bruyne could easily play his role in this system.
Its also probably the best system for Cancelo, and dare I say it Mendy.

Just glad to see him change it up a bit recently, first with the 4-2-3-1 and now this

Now the league has gone we just need to pick up points to keep the gap from those behind us. A bit more thought on defence may lead to us stumbling on something pretty good. If we can defend half decent we should finish 2nd easily enough.

Put the game into context and it was an excellent performance; a squad strained to breaking point by injury, playing 45 hours after a physically and psychologically draining defeat against a side with the second best defence in the PL which hasn't lost an away game in 11 months. It's Christmas, it's always tricky but this year TV has turned it into a complete lottery, ably assisted by VAR. We beat a very good team today.

Agreed mate.
I also think our current squad responds well to experimentation, I think they enjoy it

Thought at Wolves that Walker, Mendy, Otamendi, and Bravo were the worst technical players we had in the team. With two removed today, we didn’t surrender possession nearly as much, but we lacked a little physicality on the left. We can probably carry Walker’s limited ability in some games, especially when his recovery speed is required, but we were able to create so much more once he was kept out wide and better players were able to get on the ball in the middle.
Couldn't watch the game to comment on the accuracy of your assessment but there is a big difference keeping possession with 11 men at home against a team defending and doing it with 10 men away from home against a team pressing to chase the game. ( three of them played against Leicester when we were excellent.)

Name one offside where an arm or finger is offside and its been given!!?? They have to pick a point (Armpit) as the rule states any point of the body that can score donates offside!! Usually with an attacker moving in a forward direction towards the goal, the armpit/torso is that point!! VAR is applying the law of the game as it currently stands!! Whether the law needs tweaking is another conversation but as it stands its calling them right!!

Agree on the Ref point. it was a little unclear at the time, but it never touched the ref, the Shef united player played it at him, that shouldn't mean the game is stopped!!Again according to the current laws, the game played on and the correct decision was made. Similar to the Shef Untied goal being disallowed, again the correct decision!!

The Sterling goals against West Ham and Chelsea, both of those ‘offsides’ were ridiculous decisions with lines used against his armpit where he still looked onside so can’t figure out how either offside was given and all I could figure at the time was his fingers were offside, maybe someone could post the pics?

Also as pointed out, still no sign of any pictures for the Salah offside against City, even though with the two Sterling goals they seemed to find countless lines to try and prove he was offside.

Not related to offside, but how did Van Dijk not have hand ball given against him for the pass today, it is clear the ball hits his arm but again nothing given.

Edit - the still picture of VVD handball looks definite and is largely being reported as such, but also seen a two second clip from a different angle which is inconclusive, VVD himself saying he can’t remember if he hand balled it, which is a weird thing to say!

3 points after a ridiculous schedule and yet we have to play again on Wednesday.

Many aren’t performing well, thank fuck for De Bruyne.

Sterling either needs a rest or to pull his head out of his arse. He’s really not been at it for a while.

Did the ball hit the ref for our first?

We would have taken 2-0 before the match started. Really tough 48 hours. The players are not robots. Unfortunately the heights they have hit have done them no favours as the bar has been set so high now as have fans expectations. Ok we know the PL has gone but if we can plod on in the top 3 until we get AL and LS back I think we will be given a massive boost. Sane gets you at least 10 goals a season and provide many assists and Laporte will halve the goals we concede. Massive misses both of them.Pep can do it but he is as good as the tools he has got and he has not had them all at his disposal this season.
