They are all politicians up there, politicians, shop stewards, football managers, popes.

With the sick pay it is a very tricky question, as you never know if someone fakes it or not. The problem is much smaller when your employees work from the home office and all your meetings done through microsoft teams calling. This way they don't look for an excuses that often and do more job from my experience. Maybe that is something to think about?
