It was me.

Our registration page is getting twatted as part of an ongoing (and failing) Denial of Service attack. We were storing several hundred thousand sessions on our registration page, and I wanted to let the garbage collector run in peace. Back now.

I have just googled DoS attack. Is it unusual for an attack on a site like this??

what would the benefit be to an intruder?

No, we get attacked all the time by somebody or other. It's quite normal for a site this size. Most of my time on the server is spent stopping these types of things.

There isn't really a benefit apart from them knocking us offline and slowing us down.

Do you report them anywhere? or are they all based in Singapore etc.

It's not worth the time reporting them to be honest. They all come from large Botnets, the most recent attack coming from Germany, but many are China or Russia based.

Some are concerted efforts to knock us offline. Others are bots trying to index all of our information and killing the server by doing so. Either way, they use up the same amount of resources as 100s of users.

No idea about all this botnets stuff but I spent 2 hours browsing BM on my blackberry during a very boring conference call today and it worked like a dream the whole time. Cheers Damocles.

Might have been mentioned before, but switching between sub forums regularly jams things.

Kind of odd that attacking BM is so popular. Are you a prestige target. Damocles?
