How do you compare "size"?
Financially? They are Championship level
Footballing quality? Lower Premier League/Championship level
Support? Up there with the top PL clubs
International recognition? Midtable Premier League level
Historic achievement? Up there with the top PL clubs
Perfect assessment.
Worth saying too that nobody but nobody suggested a European Super League would be incomplete without (either of) these two.
So potential return on investment? Not even Championship level (because there's no golden ticket to the Premier League).
In terms of support they are huge. Liverpool and United would superseded if there was a British League as Ireland would switch. That's why there won't be a British League to protect the rags and dippers.
I'm not convinced this is true. (Or at least as true as it once was). I can only speak anecdotally but, in my experience, the post Good Friday Agreement generation have rather less enthusiasm for the baggage of bigotry than old farts like me had. (Thankfully).
I heard that whilst Irish and Scottish Americans are large in number in the States, the English Americans are more numerous but less admitted to!
Apparently, German heritage was by far the most widespread amongst white "settlers".
You must be right though. It only stands to reason that there would be more English than Irish or Scottish (or combined, even).
Presumably, the World Wars made claiming German ancestry unpopular. As for English ancestry...
White Americans (I think it's fair to say) love to focus on their forefathers' survival instincts, true grit and how they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps etc. etc. (This is especially true amongst the more racist elements of White America but by no means exclusive to them).
Therefore, the whole Angela's Ashes narrative (for example) became a more attractive go-to for Average Joe White America than having English blood.
They're an insular race with a shamefully neglected education system (until there's a profit to he made at Third Level). Most of their impressions of the wider world come from Film and TV. As as far as many are concerned, all English people spend all day, pinching China teacup handles and passing sardonic observations. There's no glory in being descended from that (supposed) circumstance while working a dead-end 9 to 5 today.
The corollary of this is if you ever spend time in upper Manhattan, you'll find some very wealthy Americans who boast of their English ancestry.
That's my theory, anyway.
