What do you mean you can't change the router? Do you mean physically swap the device, or change the settings. There are some settings that can improve wifi that you can login and change. You can, on some routers, split the wifi into 2 frequencies, 5GHz and 2.4GHz. Apple Iphones work best on 5GHz I was told by EE (but that might be something to do with their router, I don't know). Also you can change the channels that the router uses to avoid interference from other routers nearby.I am only 100 metres from the exchange so get a decent speed (36mb).
Problem I have is sky Wi-fi is really poor and you carnt change the router so my lad struggles to get Wi-fi in his bedroom.
My speed can be 36mb one minute and 5mb or less the next.
The final nail in the coffin was sky increasing their prices which prompted me to look around for a better service
Sky should be able to help you make these adjustments or there's plenty of advice online.
However, you need to test the speed using a wired connection direct into the back of the router to ensure it is the router that's the problem and not an area issue. IF it's an area issue it could affect other providers you move to.
Also possibly worth having a set of powerline adapters (some work as wifi extenders) as well.
