It needs saying that SKY are masters of the oversell. "Survival Sunday"? Does anybody in their right mind really think that SKY would have given two hoots about the bottom feeders if their beloved manyoo n 'pool were still "slugging it out" for
the "Premiership" (or "league", as it's still called in my house)?
Their pandering to Sore Alex (EVERY Friday lunchtime, during the season, is devoted to his latest pearls of wisdom) is embarassing.
If Andy Gray said so, then it must be true. Andy will never ever ever criticise a current England international, Manyoo, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsene Wenger, Villa, Everton, Rangers or a fellow Scot. Other than that, it's all fair game.
Most of their pundits (yes, you Jamie, Butch Wilkins, Ruud and Platt -erpuss) are so busy trying to endorse SKY's overselling of the product that they're terrified of breaking ranks and actually delivering a meaningful insight. If you ever listened to Graeme Souness's thoughtful and considered opinions during Champion's League coverage on RTE (Irish TV) on a Tuesday night, you could be forgiven for thinking that he has a sychophantic, windbag of a twin brother that pops up on SKY's all-singing, all-dancing, love-in on Wednesdays. The man has actually admitted to "having more freedom" on RTE.
Soccer Saturday (which is essentially radio on tv) is a triumph of the genius that is Jeff Stelling. Honestly, how any man can make the whinging of Phil Thompson, the unintelligibe meanderings of Paul Merson and whatever that is that passes for conversation from Le Tissier (I'll excuse Champagne Charlie because he is actually witty on occasion) and turn it all into three, four or even five hours of more than passable entertainment - and still not win a BAFTA, TV NOW award etc. is beyond me.
Soccer AM? Lost it's edge long ago. I'll stay in bed, thanks.
SKY Sports News? Addictive and, at times, unmissable TV. Although, it has to be said that they're bastards for dragging the b*******s out of even the most mundane stories at times.
As for Setanta? Every day, in every way, they make SKY look brilliant.
I hate it when City are on that channel because they never give us any credit for anything. I try not to watch other football on that channel because they're just so sloppy with their links, camera work etc (even the ads look like something out of a 1970's cinema).
I hate their Magner's League coverage (commentary is long-winded and the analysis makes their football coverage seem slick).
Their Sports News channel is like something a transition year class would cobble together.
I think it's unfair that they've got exclusive rights to some England world cup games (no satellite channel should have that).
I do hope they survive though because I quite like being able to watch Gaelic Games when I'm abroad (even if their coverage is (again) inferior in every way to RTE's).
