Surprised it doesnt carry a stronger sentence. Just told to follow the law in future !

Hahaha that is rather bizarre. Just a "try not to have slaves working for you in the future" From the details id have assumed he would have at least be charged tax evasion, which as its clear evasion rather than avoidance can carry a prison sentence. But nup....it seems they went for "please pay tax and N.I in the future if you dont mind old chap".

There's a locally notorious business round here that continually has a stream of non English speaking help in the summer months, whom he puts up in caravans on his site. I don't know how legal it is, but it's not a great situation. Lots of people crammed into old decrepit caravans and a portaloo. He used to hire local youths for pennies during summer, but that that all stopped years ago.

After the first lockdown when people were out exploring the local area more he took it upon himself to close a public footpath that bordered on to his land so Joe Public wasn't wandering around seeing the conditions he had them in. Just wrote 'closed' on a sign and hung it at each entrance to the footpath.

As I say he's know so assume he's been investigated for it, but something isn't right there.

It’s not a conviction. This is a mechanism that doesn't require a criminal prosecution in order to be activated.

Often wonder if a few opportunists jumped onto the Ukrainian refugee crisis to secure themselves forced labour

I know its slightly off the OP original topic of conversation but I was reading this recently and was shocked at the scale of modern slavery in Africa.

but surely its against the law to 'employ'. the employer knew he was breaking the law but doesnt get nicked. So how does this help to stop slavery and trafficking ?

Because if they breach it they will face criminal actions.

Previously he could have registered as a sole trader, now he must register as a limited company and comply with all filing requirements.

This doesn't sound like an egregious example of modern slavery. It's an Albanian guy running a dodgy firm with no process or procedures who thinks he can run a business on his own whims.

If it is more serious than that, then the police need to collect evidence and ask the CPS to prosecute.

It’s very unlikely he has been trafficking people to work for him in car washes, because it attracts too much attention.

What he has most likely been doing is employing people who are asylum seekers, people who have had their applications dismissed, or other irregular migrants.

That’s just slavery.
