By dead river, did you mean that our match the other night was? When you say elite, how many teams should it be restricted to? Sorry I'm just trying to understand

cheers, was just trying to work out what you meant. So you would prefer, say, 32 champions drawn into a home/away knockout and just get on with it
I can see the allure, the mini league thing that ended last season was a bit of a drudge at times, but my worry is you would get very few decent games in the format you prefer - after Spain, England, Italy, France and Germany, the quality would bomb and it still relies on those 5 teams finding each other later in the comp. Your point about flooding it with 3rd and 4th places is hard to deny, 'champions league' indeed.
