Hmm. I reckon 99% of the time, a smack is administered simply because the parent lost patience. There probably exists circumstances where a smack would be the best thing to do, at least for very young children doing something ridiculously dangerous.

Are you serious? I don't have kids so don't know how I'll feel about it when I do but I was slapped gently on the behind or hand and it never did me any harm.

to be honest theres a world of difference between abuse and a light slap for being naughty.i believe that's why the kids of today have no respect for authority as they have nothing to fear.my dad hardly ever hit us but if we misbehaved we thought we might get a slap which kept us in line.for the record I didn't hit my kids but told them I would plenty of times.theyve grown up good well adjusted adults.
