"Smart" homes

Smart homes are mostly populated by dumb lazy people in my view. Timers for lights / heating and so on have been around for years - for some reason people are suddenly amazed coz they can operate things from a phone and by voice activation. There is more than one born every minute now it seems

At least in 1984, this sort of thing was imposed on people by a dictator. I don't want my smart toilet selling data to some company about how often I have a shit.

If it connects to the internet (wired or wireless) then it is a potential vulnerability for hackers to access your digital world. As quickly as these vulnerabilities are plugged hackers find another way to defeat the security. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/aug/10/vibrator-phone-app-we-vibe-4-plus-bluetooth-hack

My old boss is a certified ethical hacker. He once showed me the feed from his next door neighbours Wifi security camera even though it was supposedly locked down and password protected.

Anyway, how lazy do you need to be to have a f**king Wifi enabled washing machine?

Before I left UK I fitted the old fella's house with WEMO wifi light bulbs and a couple of cameras. He had recently departed from this world and I had been left with the responsibility of looking after the place until we sold it. The reason for the WEMO stuff was that I was at work from early morning to late evening most days (and then in t'pub) and I wanted some sort of security for the place. The 'random' lights switching on and off was a good feature, a bedroom light would come on, then the landing light and next the bog. It did look like there was someone in the place. I had one camera pointing at the front door and the other at the kitchen window, they would send me emails if any movement was detected. I remember one time my sister popped in to look for something and when she left I called her from work and told her she'd left something in the kitchen. She said "how did you know that? It's my tea!"
If I had been staying there any longer, my next step would have been to add a 3G backup connection to t'internet, after all, all it takes is to cut one pair of wires (or a fibre) and the whole lot goes off line.

Ive got the Hive thermostat which means you can switch the heating on if it's a bit chilly walking from the pub!! It's also far more user friendly and adaptable than the previous timer which you had to reset every 6 months. Some lights are on manual timers, via an app is just natural progression.

The internet of things is just the modern version of removing your front door putting up a sign saying help yourself and then fucking off down the pub for a few days. Don't be surprised if your life is for sale on ebay when you get home.

Would absolutely love this. I spend all day worrying about it going dark because I know at some point I'm going to have to stand up and turn a light on. And don't get me started on using a key when I want to get into my house.
