Smart meters - what is the purpose?

I don`t need a smart meter because I`m a tight tw@t, ask my wife.

I turn everything that does`nt need to be on off constantly. And if i find out they have put the heating on before November woe betide.

Had a new kitchen fitted which necessitated moving meter from inside to out. First, they tried to refit the old meter, despite my telling them I needed the space in the box for an isolator switch. So they fitted a new meter. One week later, they were back to replace the new meter with a smart meter.
Never looked at the data. It's bollox.
The co will benefit by not reading the meter, I will not. Lower bills? Do me a favour.

I always thought, so they told me, that smart meters can be read wirelessly. I've been getting emails from BG telling me it's time to read the meter! Whatever happened to those guys who used to come round to collect the shillings yer'd put into the meter and then carefully wrapped them into a very tidy cyclinder?

Since we moved here last September, we are constantly pestered from the energy company to have one installed. After the one in the last house we are very reluctant, as our bills increased significantly after fitting.
I don’t see how they can increase the price you pay is the same no matter what, you can use a calculator to work it out if need be, I’ve just switched to agile octopus and as we are both in during the day the cost savings can add up, this week alone probably saved about £3, doesn’t sound a lot but £5 a week is £240 a year give or take. . I don’t think it’s been tight I think it’s been careful, if obviously you are out of the house most of the day it becomes a lot more inflexible.

Unbelievably they still have them reading smart meters.
Yup. My electricity is on a smart meter installed when we redirected the supply. They come and read it and leave the door to the box swinging in the wind. It then blows off on our windy corner. Had to repair it twice in three years. “The box is the consumer’s responsibility.”

I think most companies like to have a manual reading every 6 months or so. hopefully that highlights any issues with the information they are getting. It's also a good idea to do this anyway for your own peace of mind.
