What happens if you actually want to watch the match? A minor consideration I know, but if I've paid 50-odd quid for a ticket...

These will be the same fookers who complain about the proposed new costs for ST mate.

why do people bring banners and scarves

To demonstrate their support.

Why do you ask ?
Well its the same thing isn't it, all adds to the atmosphere.
Smoke is certainly added to the atmosphere, this statement is 100% factual, not sure it adds much to the football atmosphere though, unless you want to listen to the stamping feet of the old bill rushing up the aisles to find the culprit, who as I pointed out earlier never seems to have the balls to stand there holding the smoke bomb, its much easier to roll it down the steps to get some other bugger into trouble.

What is the connection between being noisy and smoke ?
As things stand, not much at all. However, if we ever got to the point where it looked like it does abroad then I think it would. If they were used to create a spectacle that would encourage everyone else to up their game and to be less self-conscious and come out of their shell a bit. The Etihad can be extremely noisy on the odd occasion when people can be tempted in, it just takes a galvanising event. Sometimes it can be biased refereeing, or a spirited team performance, or sometimes even a response to going behind as long we're fighting to get back in it. For this reason I've always been a fan of self-galvanising events like the Poznan or like the inflatables against Hamburg. Smoke bombs are another where I see potential if it can ever be done on a European scale. However, from my perspective this isn't what's being discussed here. This thread started off with how long smoke bomb throwers should be banned for. Anything from three years to life has been suggested. So I don't think I need to justify myself. I think those in favour of bans ought to be justifying why they are in favour of banning fellow blues over something which cannot be shown to be dangerous.

Smoke bombs don't create an atmosphere, they aid one. It's like being at a club, smoke is used when there's a drop as it feels fucking great to be going at it, surrounded by hundreds more who are experiencing the same feeling, all within this environment.

200 fans singing and chanting.

200 fans singing and chanting whilst surrounded by smoke.

I know which one is a bit more 'edgier' and eye catching. It helps those who are a bit insecure get into the mood and really up their voice.

All things have a cycle. English football saw the age of flick knives, serious violence, organised violence, terrace fashion, now it's a younger generation trying to aid an atmosphere that has been sterilised due to the older generations actions when they were younger.

Those 40 year old's saying smoke bombs are bad, what do you think those 50 year old's thought of you kicking the shit out of each other when you were 18?

No pyro, no party.

Plenty of time to get away from them once they are set off if they bother people that much. Nothing wrong with them in my eyes, shouldn't be the case but it does tend to liven up when they are set off.

Wrong......in the concourse on Saturday it went off right next to this young girl, it was packed solid and no way could she get out of the way.
The only way it livens things up is the steward comes down and gets in a tangle with the culprit and others get dragged in. This is exactly what happened and could easily have got worse but hey ho it livened things up for a few.

Can't we compromise? Smoke bananas.

I might just carry an Acme Thunderer whistle and if I see someone throw a smoke bomb, blow the whistle next to his ear; it might burst his eardrum but would surely add to the general atmosphere of gaiety.

I can't remember many times when City fans have set off smoke bombs or flares in order to improve the atmosphere.

Sometimes it seems to be about getting one over on the stewards, a public display that they've fallen down on the job. But usually, and nearly always when they're set off on the concourse, its about trying to startle as many City fans as possible, and then having a good laugh about it with their mates. Its the same mentality as the kids at school who set bangers off in the playground, usually behind the most timid lass in the class.

It doesn't surprise me that a smoke bomb was set off near the OP's daughter. It was probably intentional. Its more of a laugh isn't it? Her fault if she doesn't know the difference between a flare and a smoke bomb.

Good point.

the Sky commentator for the Spurs incident was going on for ages about how foolish and how they are ruining the game, however the same channel for Champions league games cum in their pants when showing Galatasary and dortmund fans with flares etc.

double standards yet again and the English being punished. No alcohol at home games over here for European games, but on the continent they serve beer to home fans !!
