Smoke bombs yet again

Flares are dangerous and I understand that fully.

Smoke bombs are not.

If somebody lets a smoke bomb off and holds it or sets it off and puts it down, it will do no harm.

I am for them, think they look good and definitely add to the atmosphere.

Hopefully see plenty more this season in the stands.

100% correct that the smoke bombs are not especially dangerous, however those who bring them don't hold them or just put them down, they throw them or put them down and kick them as far as they can. so they have.....

1. no idea where they will end up
2. no idea who they will affect (kids/oap's/asthma)
3. no idea who will be accused by the over the top old bill who come in to find the culprit, and get thrown out/arrested/banned

Why don't those who condone the smoke bombs understand these concerns ?

A common theme on this forum is how Thatcher, the police and the football authorities have ruined football because they have banned standing, someone even commented a few posts ago that stewards/police don't hassle spectators at other sporting events. But at other sporting events they don't fight(the Derby last year) throw missiles (the Derby last year), invade the pitch to attack opposition players (again the Derby), swear and sing racist songs.
A smoke bomb is the latest in a long line of unruly stupid behaviour that could easily cost someone their life. As Blues have commented, they are being let off in crowded, enclosed concourses. What happens if someone has asthma or other breathing problems ? What happens if it forces people to move quickly away from the smoke causing a crush? You will never bring back safe standing whilst fans behave like this. In fact you just give the authorities more ammunition.

It is flares and not smoke bombs that are dangerous! Not got a problem with smoke bombs so long as they are used sensibly!

Even flares are safe enough if held away from the person, in a non enclosed space ie not a crowd. Most things can be used safely in the appropriate conditions, but that's the issue, a smoke bomb in an unsuspecting confined space/crowd, can cause problems.

Okay cleavers I appreciate the point you're making, a couple got set off at cardiff from the back and got rolled down the steps, now surely if it happens to just stop next to a random fan the police aren't just going to come along and eject them on that basis? They don't make large bangs, no sparks etc so can't really see how they can startle anyone, however I appreciate setting one off next to a ten year old girl isn't the best place for one and finally I've got asthma myself and they've never bothered me.

I've been in the middle of them quite a few times over the last season or two and I have to say 90% of the people that 'buzz' off them are young lads (15-25) - which is me as well. I've only ever seen them set off by this age group. As stated earlier in the thread, it's to add a bit of an edge, I appreciate they're not to everyone's taste however you're not going to keep 3,000 people from different ages, backgrounds etc happy all the time, take a look at a thread I started a while ago, viewtopic.php?f=16&t=280750 the majority are for them and I have to say so long as I don't see people being a dick with them (throwing them, setting them off next to kids etc) I can't see the problem, and even hope to see more of them at games.

there is nothing wrong with them, as long as people don't throw them.

and the only reason i think people do throw or kick them is because they don't want to get nicked.
if they were allowed then people would just hold them like you would a normal flare.

it didn't stain my clothes and didn't affect my breathing at all. i just couldn't see the game for a minute.

For the fifth or sixth time, I don't have an issue either, but they are not used responsibly, and THAT is the issue.

If a smoke bomb is let off behind somebody, or thrown in their direction, how many will have sufficient experience of them to instantly think "Ah, this is a smoke bomb, not a flare. I don't need to be alarmed"?

Exactly, I was once startled without any kind of warning.

What makes it a bigger joke, those who couldn`t give a flying fuck about other peoples safety and the fact that they have to throw them, for fear of getting nicked and prosecuted.
So,why resort to it in the first place,if you know you`re breaking the law ?? Any fucker, daft enough to stand there with one in his hand, whilst his knuckles are dragging on the floor, if they have the balls.
Thats the best bit.too many talk big,but not one of you daft fuckers have the balls to do it.On no,let some other daft fucker take the rap and be stupid enough.
A half whit is looking for the other half !!!
