Smoke bombs yet again

I'm assuming the smoke bombs are let off on the concourse because there is no CCTV. If they did it on the terraces they'd get caught and arrested.

Personally I don't have a problem with smoke bombs, but that's just me.

The thing is.

What the Government, PL, H&S, etc, have done to football in this country is much worse than a smoke bomb.

I went to Villa and the stewards were up and down the steps throughout the match hassling City fans because they were stood up. They even got the Police involved. You never see that happening at other sports. No doubt it will be the same at Sunderland, who have cut our ticket allocation.

I don't think many disagree, but if you are the innocent who's feet it lands at, and gets nicked and a ban, will you still be happy with them ?

But that's the point isn't it.

They've made it an offence to let a smoke bomb off inside or outside the stadium.

They tired to make us all sit as well, but one by one fans all over the country stood up.(to them)

Now we have a situation where standing is still illegal, yet 10,000's do it each week. And those that brought in that law/rule turn a blind eye. Ah?

As for being arrested. Unless the Police are 100% sure and the CCTV footage shows it, they can't arrest you. And I'd hope those stood around you would back you up.

I am not condemning or condoning this incident or smoke bombs. For me though a lot of the fun and atmosphere has disappeared from the game and they can harp on about the ''Matchday experiance'' and introduce all sorts of gimmicks but it is all but dead and buried.

When the powers that be took away standing areas they created this monster. In the old days 10 year old girls and their dad would probably be in the quieter and less boisterous areas of the ground, while the lads could sail a bit close to the edge on the terraces.

I think you're missing the point, like most others. The standing issue is very different and can't be compared, because 3000 people don't have smoke bombs. As for the police at football, believe me after more than 40 years experience of policing at football they will take the easiest route to an arrest, and bugger the consequences. You also miss the points about kids/oaps, that's one of respect.

I'm not having a go at you jrb, I know you are sensible, but there are too many selfish people who don't give a toss, and its these that we need to educate, football is for everyone, not just the selfish minority.

I'll repeat, if used correctly, I don't particularly worry about the smoke bombs, the problem is they are not used correctly, and certainly not in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, though I've never those, but I bet it doesn't say use them in crowds and confined spaces anywhere in the instructions.

I appreciate that Cleavs.

However, opinions on this subject will always be divided.

As I've stated, I don't have a problem with it. I also except that other City fans do, mainly the older ones and those with Kids.

From a selfish point of view it's the Younger City fans letting off a bit of steam and having a bit of fun. TBH I can't blame them. If I was their age again I'd probably join in with them for a laugh.

TBH it beats throwing seats, missiles, and kicking the f*** out of each other before, during, and after the match. We can hardly point the finger.(if you were around in the 80's and 90's?)

A common theme on this forum is how Thatcher, the police and the football authorities have ruined football because they have banned standing, someone even commented a few posts ago that stewards/police don't hassle spectators at other sporting events. But at other sporting events they don't fight(the Derby last year) throw missiles (the Derby last year), invade the pitch to attack opposition players (again the Derby), swear and sing racist songs.
A smoke bomb is the latest in a long line of unruly stupid behaviour that could easily cost someone their life. As Blues have commented, they are being let off in crowded, enclosed concourses. What happens if someone has asthma or other breathing problems ? What happens if it forces people to move quickly away from the smoke causing a crush? You will never bring back safe standing whilst fans behave like this. In fact you just give the authorities more ammunition.

That about sums it up.

However, at the time there was no other alternative.

Football in this country was run by the Hooligans.

Fast forward to 2013.

It's a different kettle if fish now, bar the odd incident throughout the season.

Derbies will always be volatile.

Hence why safe standing needs to be introduced. But smoke bombs will still be banned, And young lads will still set them off on the concourse because there is no CCTV.

Have you ever been to a test Cricket match? ;-)

Flares are dangerous and I understand that fully.

Smoke bombs are not.

If somebody lets a smoke bomb off and holds it or sets it off and puts it down, it will do no harm.

I am for them, think they look good and definitely add to the atmosphere.

Hopefully see plenty more this season in the stands.
