Snow

Did a 747-400 “rescue mission” to Heathrow about a decade ago to pick up passengers and luggage after days of cancellations due to “snow.”

As we descended through the cloud layer, we expected to see Iceland or Greenland, but it looked like a Winter Tuesday in most places in America! We were dumbfounded!

Then, as the resident Brit on the Flight Deck I’m harangued about WTF is the problem? There was about 4-6 inches of snow, possibly, and yet things were almost at a standstill!

It appears Britain, and even Britain’s Crown Jewel airport, is simply incapable of dealing with even moderate snowfall in the winter, which is a joke. A few snowplows to clear the plain roads and a few salt/sand/beet juice trucks to prep the roads ahead of time, and it wouldn’t even be a thing!

At least it’s great for the kids and young at heart, because it gives them a chance to have a day off and enjoy natures beauty!

The last decent snowfall I remember was in the early eighties. We just don’t get much of it any more apart from Scotland and high ground. If the soft southerners get a millimetre of snow it’s headline news for some reason.

The problem is no one wants to spend huge amounts of money on equipment that may or may not be needed, place that you can almost guarantee will have snow every year will be properly geared up and can function. Why would you buy millions of pounds worth of snow ploughs that would sit for years and years, need maintenance on the off chance it snows a bit. Airports I agree probably should be a bit more prepared but the same applies.
My daughter’s school is already preparing for cancel days! Christ I used to walk two miles in a snow drift to get to school, these days with H&S they can’t wait to close, I wonder if I can find the local authority for the absence.
