So easy to play through

I think Pellegrini has accidentally solved this problem (even though he doesn't see the problem himself) when he has had to put Fernandinho as the central defender. We look in better shape when Fernandinho plays as the central defender/sweeper.

He's usually the one pressing from midfield and one of the central defenders has been doing the same, so therefore when Fernandinho is in as central defender he's doing the job of what two players had been told to do, eg; as a sweeper.

This is not something which has started happening this year or even last year IMO. You could find very similar examples in our title-winning season under Pellegrini, it was our goal-scoring that won us the league that year. We have regressed significantly since then yet Pellegrini does nothing.

Totally agree - that space between the midfield and defence is only made worse with Demichelis as the line is often 10-20 yards further back. Our initial press is often weak, lost count of the times an opposition centre back is given a free pass into central midfield, or even allowed to run the ball into that area, creating even more of an overload.

As soon as the team was announced yesterday, with our most vulnerable defensive pairing relying on a midfield two, we were in trouble. Everyone could see it, bar our manager.

It's also obvious that Fernando is only effective in a three man midfield, yet he's been left exposed by Pellegrini in a two against Liverpool twice and Stoke.

I can't for the life of me understand how a supposedly top manager who has 30 years of experience can consistently make the same mistakes. It isn't rocket science and we've been witnesses to the same types of goals being conceded by the same tactical naivity. Pellegrini doesn't care about who he faces as he says, he cares solely about the football of his own team. The issue with that is this; above average teams with above average players will tear us apart time and time again because we afford so much space in the final third because of this ridiculous pressing obsession that has left us with such a terrible record against top 10 sides this season. I don't know whether he is just that bad of a manager or if he simply doesn't care about our club anymore and doesn't care if he messes things up for Pep

This x100. It's ridiculous how we have stuck with a totally broken system for so long. We badly needed a deep lying positionally disciplined midfielder to play behind Fernandinho and Yaya. Firstly it would allow Yaya to not try and play box to box, secondly a technically capable deeper player would also stop Yaya from having to drop so deep to pick up the ball, meaning we would actually start our attack with an extra attacker (as Yaya would maintain a more attacking position) and thirdly, Fernandinho can press without leaving a huge gap around him.

But no, he went with a 2.
In terms of what we do wrong, the problem lies with the coach for continuing to keep faith in stars who keep losing.

But we often wax lyrically about playing 2 in the middle. But are we really? Isn't Silva a midfielder? Wasn't he starting in the middle yesterday? So how does that work? Why did Carrick get so much time on the ball in toutnumbered

The commentators banged on about this all first half as we got sliced open constantly. Coz we seemed constantly
outnumbered in the middle, even though we weren't. We both played the same formation. So the argument of more players in an area is mute. We simply have players not playing well defensively.

Funny to note, the easy dicing was abated a bit when lazy Bony showed up and actually challenged the United deep ball Carrier.

In my mind, our most attacking players don't do enough to help overall team defense. I mean on the shit Demi play when he injured Joe, there simply was no one to pass to. They had us covered from pillar to post. That means Martial, Rahford, and the 3rd kid had us squeezed, and their mid 3 were on ours like white on Rice. This is before kickoff.

We on the other hand have this weak press, with players open everywhere. In fact, only our CBs and Dihno Navas and Nando, pressure consistently. Everyone else is always late, and the bigger the name, the later they are in their press.

I wish you were right, but fernandinhos performance will have gone unnoticed to Pellegrini. Hes had two winning formations this season; the 4-3-3 against Seville away and the 4-4-1-1 against liverpool (cup) and Kiev. Both contained Fern, Fern and Yaya. We were solid and threatened on the break. He dumped both in a heartbeat.
