These days people use legend as a term for someone who is a good guy but often the older members of the forum take this to mean the traditional, real meaning of the word legend i.e. if someone says Tevez is a legend they might just mean he is a great player and a great guy not that he is a genuine city legend.

Anyway, enough of that, who would you class as true city legends from the modern era, if any? Obviously there are the likes of Bell, Trautmann etc..who we hear about all the time. What about from the 80's and beyond, would Dickov and Goater fall in to true legendary status?
 
Shaun Goater is definetly a legend I cant praise the guy high enough for what he as done for our club.
Paul Dickov is another legend that goal he scored against Gillingham was absolutely brilliant and he gave me one of the best days of my life!
Id have to say Richard Dunne is a legend in my eyes after all the years he has been with us and he played a big part in us staying in the Premier League and he got 4 player of the year awards in a row.
 
The excessive use of "legend" irritates me.

My understanding of the true meaning of "legend" is that it is a story passed on from generation to generation. When this term was bastardised and used for footballers it should surely mean the same - someone from the past who is still talked about.

People these days wander round going "legend" because their mate in the pub does a decent fart.
 
Legends are winners and unfortunately we haven't had a great deal of winners in the last 30+ years

I had this discussion with a bloke as we came away from the Everton match.
He was talking to is son (who must have been six) and he said that whilst we worship players such as Goater we have a small club mentality.
I disagreed with him on the Goat as he scored a hundred for us and he classes us as his club. Dickov on the other hand was a useless twunt and we both agreed on that. People who idolise Dickov for "THAT" goal should also IMHO idolise fat Bob Taylor for his goal against Brum that more or less secured our promotion back to the Prem under Joe Royle.

When it comes to modern legends, apart from Goater I don't think anyone has been with us long enough to achieve that status.

I understand what your saying about Dickov, He wasnt a good footballer but he did give us 100% commitment in every game and loved the club, I think 'That' goal that he scored in the Play-Off Final was one of the biggest goals in the clubs history in my opinion, If we had of lost that day god only knows what would of happend us.

In which case fella Horlock should be viewed in the same respect, but he isn't.
Weaver should also be up there for saving all the pens in the shoot out.
 
Goater wasn't a particularly good player.

He got very lucky in a side with some fantastic creative players.

He certainly had the knack of poking it home, I suppose, but in terms of ability he's no "legend".

His big ears and nice guy personality are the real reason he was popular.
 
Players I've considered legends since I popped out are the goat, Kinky, Ali B and Dunney Monster. Still got a nice photo of me as a baby in Kinkladze's arms, takes pride of place on my wall.
 
Definately the Goat, scored goals in all 3 divisions we were in when he was here and genuinely loves the club.

Dicky classifies for Semi-Legendary status in a way, mainly for that goal, but also for the fact that he did play a vital role for us during the times we were 'down there'.

Kinky and Uwe to me were glimmers of hope in a very depressing time for the club, so deserve cult status, they probably would've done much better during a more fruitful era in the club's history, like now.

For me theres a difference between cult hero and legend, so in the last 10-15 years the only real legend for me has to be The Goat.
 
I'm discounting players who were part of any 70s side as we were still pretty good then and there was some overlap with the late 60s/ early 70s team.

Off the top of my head:

Top 5 (edit - just counted 6 lol!)
Goater - discussed to death, already

Andy Morrison - much underated, much better than the hard man, clogger as often portrayed

Kinky - a ray of sunshine in dark times

Dunnie - real shame it ended like it did

Nicky Weaver - From his early promise and 'under 21s' days to Wembley and his many comebacks

Paul Lake - we'll never know how good he might have become

Andy Hinchcliffe - on his day a fantastic left back. I bet Bridgy wishes he could cross like AH?
Tony Coton - blotted his copybook when he went you know where though!
SWP - we had an academy lad playing for England. He was also significant enough to inspire those Colin Rudd songs.
