Re: Battle of Solo Artist Elvis Vs Hendrix Round 11
Elvis.
Elvis.
There were Blues artists doing what Elvis was doing back in the 1940's. The only thing was, they were black and the US media completely ignored them. Then when they wanted someone to make some money off, they used Elvis as a front man for Rock'n'Roll and claimed nobody had ever done anything like this before. His status in the world is a little false. Even John Lennon once said "before Elvis there was nothing", however:Knoxy38 said:Banned Tosspot said:They both changed Rock n Roll in very big ways so I thought I'd throw two huge icons together.Knoxy38 said:Hendrix......bit of a peculiar comparison to make tho.
I see your point and will stick with Jimi but if it's gamechangers then i think Elvis may win this one :)
True but you can't underestimate the power that Elvis brought with him. Until he came along it was just a thing white kids listened and sang along with, after him it became something huge. Rock n Roll would be a totally different thing without him.danburge82 said:There were Blues artists doing what Elvis was doing back in the 1940's. Good point. I suppose with the ignoring of the artists from previous decades, the hype and hysteria that followed Elvis and the other members of the "Million Dollar Quartet" really did seem like it was a new genre of music and the American masses had really never seen or heard anything like it before. It is a shame that those who went before never got the recognition. Even artists as, if not more, talented of the time (Muddy Waters for example) never got the exposure Elvis did.Banned Tosspot said:True but you can't underestimate the power that Elvis brought with him. And I'm not even a fan.
I look at it this way..... an old friend of mine was asking why Jermaine Jackson never really had a career anywhere close to his brother Michael. His point was that they were both equally good singers. My answer to him was that whilst Jermaine was a very good vocalist, he didn't have the star quality that Michael had.danburge82 said:Good point.
