Some of the snobby contingent of PJ's fans don't rate Matt, they say he has made them play faster, even for 'slow' songs. I don't see it myself, probably due to my lack of musical knowledge.

I tend to agree with that. Not sure he plays much faster, but he certainly plays with less of the feel that Irons had or the sheer power of Dave A. Dave will always be the Pearl Jam drummer for me. As a live band they were never as good again as they were with him behind the kit. I'm splitting hairs though because they may never have been as good as they were with Dave again, but they are still better than 99% of the live bands out there.

Dave's hard-hitting style gave him nerve problems or something, did it not?

Odd story really, the drummers, it's almost glossed over in PJ20, they only acknowledge it for a minute or so.

I'll never forget the day I first listened to Ten by Pearl Jam. My cousin gave me a couple of vinyls and one CD and told me the CD was a new band and that it was simply brilliant.

He was right. Their second album was even better!

Vs is a tour de force of an album and arguably the best alternative rock record made in the 90's.
Vs is probably the second most listened to album of my life. I only kind of dislike Rats but love the little tribute to Ben on the fade out.

I rarely sing along at concerts but last time I saw them, I belted out Indifference and the line 'I will scream my lungs out 'til they fill this room' was a thing of beauty.

I think they're a little ashamed of the way things went down with Dave so it made sense to gloss over it all. Disappointed that they didn't talk to him or Irons for PJ20. Suppose it saves Ed some embarrassment as he was instrumental in moving Dave out to get Jack in ... only for Jack to fuck it all off very quickly.

-- Mon Sep 17, 2012 12:26 pm --

I think Vs was the perfect riposte to Cobain's early critique of PJ.

Re: Solo/Frontman Eddie Vedder Vs Kurt Cobain Round 24

Cameron Crowe wrote an awesome article around the time PJ were recording Vs. called 5 Against 1 (the original title for the album), serious check it out if you can.

I've read it a few times. It is really excellent and an interesting journey into the headspace of the band at the time.

If any of you want to bootleg from 20/6/12, let me know.

I watched Eddie on Jools Holland and he seemed embarrassed by early clips of the band. I gotta admit, some of it looked a tad 'put on'...... almost like he was trying too hard to be a rockstar. Two of the greatest tracks came from the sessions from that album, Black and State of Love and Trust.

I'll throw my favourite PJ clip up.

I have a mate who gets all those official 'bootleg' CDs. He must have spent thousands on them.

I think he realises that he was trying so hard to shun success he rapidly became a parody of himself. As tragic an event as it was, Roskilde changed Eddie more than any of the band for the better. He made peace with his place and his band's place in the world after that.

Did you go see them at the International 2 on their first ever UK tour? That gig changed my life forever in so many ways.

I have only seen them once in 2009 and I'm kicking myself because of it. I was ill last time they were here so I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for the next tour.

I'm desperate for a Temple of the Dog tour ;)

I'm lucky to have seen them live a few times. I could've gone to the PJ20 shows but work and life got in the way!

Here's my current favourite PJ vid on youtube:
