Well-meaning parents are fuelling obesity rates by driving their children to school, even when they live within sight of the playground, a head teachers’ leader has warned.

Gail Larkin, president of the National Association of Head Teachers, said irrational fears over paedophiles combined with mounting parental workloads meant a generation of children were no longer able to walk to school.

Her comments follow the publication of research earlier this year that found the number of children being driven to school had doubled in the last 20 years, with average pupils spending more than eight minutes each morning in cars.

ha ha. I can't walk, I have a blue badge and could park fully on the road but want to keep traffic flowing. if you look at the width there is plenty of room for prams etc, believe me i check. oh and not a school in sight. nice try though.

yep. 70. too many old un's that can hardly see pottering about. clogging up the roads, you can tell them miles off. odds are a slow car up ahead is an old timer usually wearing a cap. I would make ALL public transport free for people over 70 if they hand over their licence.

I used to walk my kids to school every day. No fucking way would i let mine loose on their own till secondary school. 1/2 asleep/incompetent dangerous fuckers in a rush.3 maybe 4 times i have nearly been mowed down on zebra crossing in Duky. I mentioned this once to a community support officer...her reply.."happens to me all the time on King Street, even it all this get up and a Hi Vis Vest...I doubt she noted plates and did anything about it

There is nothing she could do about it, those CSOs have no powers to do anything. They are totally pointless in my eyes

i law i agree, but as credible witness to a dangerous driving offence (driving over a zebra crossing with a pedestrian on it is pretty dangerous). having the ability to inform those with dvla database access and having a little word in the shell of said nincompoop might help

Thatcher`s fault. She allowed any child to be allowed to apply to go to any school in their borough. Stupid decision, you should go to your local school, not one 10 miles away that you can`t walk to.
