Son looking to choose Manchester Metropolitan University.

That was pretty much what I was expecting to hear mrbelfry. I'll be whizzing him down to the ASDA and market first of all! And to the local Asian and Middle Eastern supermarkets, I just wish we had some near us. My sister lived near Finchley in London and I had a field day when visiting, topping up on all sorts of stuff. Then picking up some real bagels from the Jewish bakeries in Golders Green before setting off for home. He'll no doubt have tons to do via the SU and Uni itself, but we just wanted feedback like yours about the actual area.
Like already mentioned, it’s a really vibrant area. The walk across the park into the City Centre talk about 15 mins so you have the best of both worlds. I enjoyed working in the area.

Thanks for the lesson jimharri, I genuinely thought it was purely a scouse thing.
I wasn't certain, either. But I thought I remembered hearing young mancs being referred to as scallys back in the day.

I hope, if he gets in*, that he enjoys his time in God's own city. We're not all bad, you know?

*I have no idea how in demand places in MMU are, by the way.

He's fat safer in Hulme than the City Centre.

Won't matter really he'll be here there and everywhere getting pissed up and waking up in a different birds bed every morning.

Lucky bastard
What happens if they're man-nited supporters? Or even Liverpool, you're much closer to scousepool up there than we are ;-)

All the Scouse girls go to Edge Hill mate. He'll be fine!

Seriously though. Hulme of the 80s/90s is far different to today. Huge student vibe these days and as long as he's not acting the fool he'll be fine. Plus it's a very Blue part of Manchester, some decent City pubs over that way.

I didn't go to Uni but my mates went to Man Met, Salford Uni etc so I got the student life without going. Never saw any trouble, and ended up everywhere within a 5 mile radius of the town centre at parties and dorms.

My son’s in his second year at Manchester Met, was his second choice uni but it’s been a blessing he’s gone there.

He stayed in halls right near to the union in the first year, most of the halls are concentrated round there. There are some that are shared between both unis and others, I’d recommend trying to get into a MMU only one if you can.

Incredibly easy to get into town, either walking or by bus and a lot of facilities are close to the uni.

He’s in a house in Fallowfield now, again really easy to get either to uni or the centre.

Manchester is absolutely teeming with students now, i was besieged by hundreds, if not thousands of them along Oxford Road on Saturday afternoon as I staggered from pub to pub, they were everywhere, singing, boistrous, they absolutely love the place..... he'll have a whale of a time here!

I lived in Hulmes bullring flats throughout the 70s, and it was a bit of rough dump back then ..... but nowadays the area is much changed and is well geared up for student life, their accommodation blocks are everywhere there.

The Universities of Manchester don't really need any 'bigging up' .... their proud reputation and record speaks for itself ..... plenty of students come here to study and choose to remain in Manchester long after their graduations.

Yep, Fallowfield, Withington, Didsbury, Hulme, Moss Side ..... they are all full of students, and that's only a few of the areas they are living in!

He's the luckiest kid really from a football perspective. He chose a city shirt because of the colour when he was 5 (September 2011) when city were not the all conquering behemoth they are today. Kids at school (in Worcestershire - so close to Villa, Wolves, Baggies and Birmingham, were all dragging him round the playground to support.......... yep Nited, Liverpool and Arsenal). The contrary bit of him was determined not to support a red team. Not a bad call at 5! First game was against Leicester when Sergio scored a hatful, it was meant to be a one off. Somewhere good to watch the games he's not going to will be a plus.

What a great story. Least he didn't ask for a United shirt and get a City one instead as was my case! Funnily enough my missus who doesn't really care for football always says she loves City blue and that red just looks angry. Maybe there's something in that! He will have plenty of places to watch the games pal, obviously with our success over the last 15 years most lads and lasses his age follow City anyway. Didn't see one United shirt on sports day at my daughter's school just a lot of Blue. Times have fully changed up here for the better. Plus it's a tale as old as time, any Blue will always look out for another blue and make sure they're okay, that's as the red shirts would call it, in our DNA.

We have visited once and are back for a 2nd visit at the end of November as my son has this University down as his favourite choice so far.

He would be based around the Brooks building and in student accommodation nearby for the 1st year.

Is anyone able to give me some advice on the area around it (is it classed as Hulme?)

We are at the game against Southampton this weekend and plan to park up and have a good look around, just sussing out transport in and out of the city, and what the surrounding area is like.

I’m sure the student’s union will provide loads of info but I just hoped asking on an actual Manchester forum might give me better feedback. (ANY comments welcome, just thought first hand experience might be better)
Tbh, you are about to finance 3 years of pot smoking, other drugs, shagging and drinking with some study thrown in. I would not get too hung up on the neighbourhood

It's likely to be his first choice and right at the top of his expected grades. Of the Uni's we've looked at it will be the least likely to make offers below (although they did this year). So he'll have to be bang on it. He does work pretty hard to be fair.
"We're not all bad, you know?" I know as I've worked for a couple of companies up that way, my first job after my apprenticeship was for Hilti and the head office in those days (early-mid eighties) was Bobby Charlton House!

Do it, my one regret was not going to uni in Manchester and that's only because I live in Manchester and wanted to move away. He will love it!

Hulmes a lot safer than it used to be, I wouldn't have any issues around it

It's a pretty diverse area but he's on the wrong side of town for the Jewish community if that's important. It's an easy bus and tram ride to Prestwich or Bury although I'm not overly familiar with specifically where the Jewish community is. In today's climate in that area I'd read between the lines

No connections to the Jewish community, just loved the bagels from a proper bakery. Never had anything like them ever. It was just to say I was hoping from what we’d seen so far there would be a load of cheap shops and they’d usually be where cities have a mix of cultures. He’ll eat/try absolutely anything my boy :-)

Daughter did her physio masters at MMU and graduated this year
Following graduation, she wrote a huge letter, on her and her fellow students behalf, criticising the way the course was run and the useless tutors
So sorry to hear that, hope she got the result she deserved despite the circumstances. A key question we’ll ask is about the size of his course and contact with lecturers . He’s the type who could get “lost” in a poor/big organisation. Went to Staffs Uni last week and one of the senior staff said “we know our students”. Done a few visits now so fairly switched on to what he needs to suit him.

She’s incredibly focused and hard working and came out with a distinction despite the poor teaching
At graduation when she walked across the stage to be congratulated by the Dean, I said afterwards“ as you walked up to him, did you say “your physio course leadership is shite mate””
