Songs you don't hear anymore (some for obvious reasons!)

34 years, and were still here

replaced by city is our name.... why we ditched our own song to rip off a united song really does baffle me

34 years and we're still here was a rip off of the rags "34 years and won fuck all". So they are both rip offs of rag songs.

I preferred the City is our name... 'won fuck all since Elvis died' version but it hasn't really caught on.

Another song from the good old days was

"Dennis Tueart, king of all Geordies"

"Who said City couldn't play, City couldn't play football?!"

I've seen some old black+white footage somewhere of the 1934 FA Cup winners parade and after the Sam Cowan speach with the Mayor the fans all sing this song. Makes me wonder what else used to be sung years back. Wonder if Gary James knows...

In the pre-Maine Road days they tended to sing local songs that weren't City specific (things like "Lassie From Lancashire" which still made an apprearance at the 56 Cup Final).

There were popular 'shouts' like "Keep Chasing the Pigeons Toseland" which I think tied in with birds on the pitch at one particular game but somehow stuck (like so many chants the reason often is not directly tied in with a significant football specific moment).

There are reports of songs being sung at City in the early 1900s for Billy Meredith. Apparently this was sung on the Hyde Road terraces in 1904:

Oh I wish I was you Billy Meredith
I wish I was you, I envy you, indeed I do!
It ain’t that you’re tricky with your feet,
But it’s those centres that you send in
Which Turnbull then heads in,
Oh I wish I was you,
Indeed I do,
Indeed I do….

I think there were other chant like songs sung though they didn't get recorded. We only know about that song from 34 because it's on that great bit of film.

I am intrigued by a cartoon strip I found from a Manchester derby game in 1906. I used it on page 68 of "Manchester The Greatest City" and comment about it on p69. It shows 3 drawings of City star Bill Eadie and the caption says: "Eadie was here... there... and everywhere." It's impossible to prove but I reckon that may have been a very early form of the more modern "He's here, he's there, he's every....." and that the artist who drew the cartoon was capturing the atmoshere.

Great stuff!

We could have revived the "Keep Chasing the Pigeons..." when we played Bolton a few years ago and we were singing for Pigeonho.

"Oh I wish I was you, David Silva"

I'll have to find the tune to the "Lassie from Lancashire" and rework it to a modern chant/song.

Feed the goat...was that a song or just a chant?

I loved;
"So come on feed the Goat
Come on feed the Goat
He scores goals goals goals
We want more more more"

Villa sing the actual chorus words to Slades "Come On Feel The Noise". It's one of the best chants I've heard for a while, but I've heard then sing it once ever!

Bring on the dustbin (to injured player)

In the period before Maine Road City fans also used to shout things like "Play Up City!" and also "Give It To Tommy [Johnson]"

I also have notes saying that City fans sang "Auld Lang Syne" on occasion in the 20s (presumably around New Year?) and I also know from research that if a player got married during the 1920s City fans would sing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" when he came on to the pitch.

In the 50s there was the City version of "Bless 'em All" and a song called "City Is The Team". Also I included a story in "Farewell To Maine Road" that included a quote from a fan who claimed that City fans used to shout when Dave Ewing did a good header "There's only one head bigger than Dave Ewing and that's Birkenhead!" - I don't know how popular this actually was though!

I also talk in that book about how City fans had stunned Utd fans in 1993 by singing "17 years and we're still here" - how time flies!

Back at Hyde Road in the 1890s journalists often talked of Hyde Road's 'Electric atmosphere' - considering how 'new' (you know what I mean) electricity was at the time this was highly significant and they basically meant that Hyde Rd's atmoshere was something exciting and powerful. Fans used to take musical instruments and wear fancy dress to liven up games in the 1890s.

(Oops, beaten to it!)

One of my earliest and fondest memories of being a City fan (aged about 2 and a half) was the Kippax singing "Bring on the Champions" before City ran out.

If I remember correctly the away team always came out first to a chorus of boos followed by "Bring on the Champions" until our blue shirted heroes emerged from the tunnel.

Great days.
