For reasons I don't really understand adopting from a UK dogs home is really difficult. For example if you have children who are less than later teenagers then a significant majority of the apparently available dogs are immediately considered unsuitable for you, then if you have any smaller pets like a cat that discounts the rest of them! I understand matching the right dog to the right people is important but the criteria seems to be so tough that its self defeating.
exactly - a mate of my son down in York went through it with a local rescue centre - you don't just walk up and say I'll have that one. They had visits from a rehoming officer who okayed them and their family then they got a match then another re-homimg officer was sent and cancelled arrangements because they had a carpeted lounge (should be laminate it seems ) and they needed bigger gates across the driveway in case the dog got out. So on top of the costs to the shelter they were looking at £4k in home "improvements". And they wonder why puppy farms thrive........
