Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Fair play to anyone who travelled, shite game, shite conditions, shite travel back.

I actually missed the first half as I was in the pub and thought we'd be cruising when I got home. I should have stayed in the pub!

I have no idea who is in form and who are best team are at the moment. Ederson, Stones, Mahrez....? Not sure Pep knows either.

And I've no idea what the rest of the season looks like. We look better in "big" games, but I don't know if the sample size is large enough and whether that's a bit of a cope. Everything seems a bit one step forward two back, and I'm not looking forward to the derby for the first time in a while, but I also wouldn't be surprised if we thumped United and then did the same to Spurs. Very weird season, the weirdest since Pep's first season with us.

Gundogan: “The desire and hunger is not as in recent years”

That’s a pretty big admission. This is where Fernandinho would gather the squad together and crack some skulls. Who’s doing that this time? Gundo is the fucking club captain and he’s seemingly just hoping blindly that we’ll rediscover it. Yeah, we’re fucked.

I do wonder whether some of the players heads are frazzled.
So many players out of form, Foden, Cancelo, KDB etc.
Anyway onwards and upwards

Depends on what you mean by "available". Laporté played and Walker has played at CB before. I wouldn't have risked Stones or Akanji with the next upcoming game. Aké, I'll give you, but with Cancelo not playing very well, why would you risk him playing above the next game when Aké could cover left back then?

I see the logic of the back line was and I think Walker will survive the next starting lineup.
You've named 4 that could have started so why didn't they? Why shoe-horn a full-back in there? If you think it was to save someone for the rags game then why start Walker at all?

For a senior player to be openly saying that is a bit worrying and as you say it would have been nice for him to realise he’s part of the solution. He’s an influential lad Gundo

Beginning to think our whole season is geared towards giving everything to win the CL and if that means chucking everything else including the league so be it
Great in theory but in cups you're always one cock-up, one bit of skill or one VAR or ref problem from going out. Or you reach the final and come up against a team you've just finished 19 points ahead of but don't produce anything of note.
