Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Who knows but what a wonderful goal, Had KDB scored it would you have blamed the Southampton goalie, or said that was a worldie ??
Come on be totally honest ... if you have the balls. ;)
yes, it's a little raw due to the performance and result. There were individual errors in the lead up to both goals but the actual finishes themselves were lovely, in a pure footballing sense. Still cheeses me off though that teams always seem to score worldies against us.

I was at the game last night. Southampton is a mere 2 hours from us, compared to our 3-4 hour pilgrimage to the Etihad most weeks.

Firstly, any Munich nonsense needs to be nipped in the bud. Was some clown waving a United top in their end and it got a pretty grim response. May have only been a tiny minority but it was clearly audible.

As for the match, we got done by Southampton changing to 4-2-3-1 and their very direct attacking/play. Yet again the opposition goalkeeper spent longer than usual working on the same kick, in fact he was landing it on our subs during the warm up. It was just a straight drive deep into our half, landing it on Gomez most of the time. Doubt he's ever encountered that sort of physicality either.

They exploited our total lack of fluency given the number of changes with a very aggressive press early on. We just never kept the ball well enough to expose the large spaces outside their full backs, either by switching the ball or even just playing behind them. Both goals are awful. However, they'll need to be wary that if they play like that again, more 'pragmatic' PL sides will just clip the ball into the channel.

Definitely one to forget, but given the fixture congestion and the quality of upcoming opponents, it's not the end of the world. That was our third game in 6 days, with three incredibly important league games coming up.

Cancelo's form has gone off a cliff, regardless of position. Perhaps he needs a break from starting games.

Just on the Gundogan comments, we were a little like this in 19/20 with David Silva as club captain. Fernandinho had to call the infamous meeting after WBA in 20/21. Not sure it's anywhere near this sort of crisis level, but we are looking to play in a different way this season and clearly don't have our best set up nailed down yet.

what the hell was that ! come on lads show some desire...

cancelo was the worse but rest not far behind

blessing is if you look at fixtures that "would" have been had we got to the final, it would have fooked our team up. So at the risk of newcastle home & away and Rags at wembley its not bad to be knocked out.

You have a long time to think on a coach journey from Southampton, and after opening my front door at 2:58, I reached a simple conclusion.

Best Case Scenario: This has happened more times than we remember in the domestic cups and even some of our Carabao Cup Successes have masked an awful performance at home to Wolves, and Claudio Bravo’s finest hour at the ETIHAD

Worst Case Scenario: This defeat is part of a wider picture that has been creeping-in for almost a year, and aside from 2-3 routine victories, virtually every away game, (plus a few at the ETIHAD) have witnessed silly mistakes from players who are simply not at the required standard, or more established stars who are now in the 31-32 bracket, and either through being protected or overplayed, are slowly losing their desire and consistency.

Only time will tell, but our next two PL games might establish if it was a blip or something far worse.

That sums it up for me. I can usually work out whether it's just a bad day at the office or a larger trend, and I'm not the wiser as it stands. Most of the players have enough good will in the bank for either a crap game or a crap season, but hard to tell which it is. Let's hope the former.

I'm hoping its just our pre derby wobble - we always play shite before them no?

Walker CB, Phillips, Gomez, Palmer but still performance was abject. Cancelo has fallen off a cliff. So much so i think Rico Lewis is nailed on to start the derby which i am all for

Gomez at left back - well out of his depth

Then Ortega whos been pretty sublime since he arrived threw in a Bravo performance

File in bin and go again. There is too much to play for to get too down.

Gundogan: “The desire and hunger is not as in recent years”

That’s a pretty big admission. This is where Fernandinho would gather the squad together and crack some skulls. Who’s doing that this time? Gundo is the fucking club captain and he’s seemingly just hoping blindly that we’ll rediscover it. Yeah, we’re fucked.

TBH thats what you want from your captain! he is bang on some players think now they are City they have made it and some think they are better than they are, clearly one or two think all they have to do is turn up, well said Gundo

It's a tactic we should use more often at times, especially when the opposition are in full gengenpress mode and it is obvious we are struggling.

Put the 3 forward players on the the shoulder of the defenders, draw them in and then knock it long. It's not pretty or "Pep Ball" but it will give the other team something to think about.
Exactly half hour of Haaland.. he knocks in one ...take him off.. not many teams start gung ho pressingvafter chasing back for 40 mins. Just we didnt have an out ball or solution to their press last night..2 down in just over 26 mins i think...
