Southampton (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

That's not on Pep today. Not for me. The system worked perfectly, the lads just couldn't get it done.

He should maybe have put Marmoush on earlier, but otherwise the usually reliable old guard let him down.
But isn’t it pep’s job to see it’s not working and change it?

As did KDB, despite giving the perfect performance as to why he’s not getting a new contract.
No doubt he’ll be starting next week though….
Well that's the thing...

"Kev you are no longer needed, We think it's the right time to part ways"

Also "We are going to start you every week".

Too many changes to the team that has built up a good combination.

The first half we had absolutely no intensity or hunger whatsoever. That is on the players and Pep.

Kev and Bernie should have been nowhere near that team, and Phil and Haaland should have been pulled off at half time.

The moment marmoush came on we looked better.

All up a complete shit show.

WTF was Pep thinking. Genuinely looked at that starting 11 multiple times and don't know how he thought it would break Southampton down. They were obviously going to put everyone behind the ball and defend for their lives. Hoped it was just Pep being a genius and I'd look silly but sadly it hasn't turned out that way

We were literally the width of the crossbar away from a win and if Haaland had squared the pass for O'Reilly properly then it would have been a tap-in. Criticise Pep when we don't have the chances or look shaky in defence, but not when we've come inches from winning it but have lacked the quality to get it over the line.
Rubbish

Shameful performance, awful for 70 minutes before any urgency. Shocking team selection and waited far too long for subs.

Why was an unfit Haaland started beside an out of form Foden? We had no width all first half against a low block. Lewis should be nowhere near that team, his performance summed up by taking a great position in the box before passing backwards to a Southampton player.

If anyone has any doubt as to why KDB is off that match confirms it.

Marmoush should have started and one of Doku or Savinho.

This current team play slow ponderously toothless football. We are devoid of craft. One of the worst ever premier league sides grabbed a point against us and they were barely threatened until a late flourish.

I have much less confidence we qualify for the champions league after that shambles. Bournemouth and Fulham will certainly fancy their chances and Palace won’t fear us at all next weekend. A disastrous result at the worst possible time.

Embarrassing match thread and no doubt this thread will be too.

Pep put a team on the field who he thought had enough to beat Southampton, and Southampton got their tactics spot on. We just lacked a little bit of sharpness in the final third. It happens

Ref wasn't up to scratch and let them get away with spoiling tactics all game. The Ramsdale tactical time out was a joke, and Earl was rightly wound up by it. The referee also kept getting in the way of our passing lanes and slowed down our free kicks. He also seemed to be influenced by the crowd.

Absolutely fuming that VAR didn't even look at the penalty shout on O'Riley. Looked nailed on for me.

I think many who saw that lineup pre match feared the worst. Just why??? We have just started to get a settled team and find some form and Pep disrupts everything with six changes and this is the result, abysmal. Haaland should have been used as a sub not started and Foden and MacAtee might as well not have been on the pitch.
I understand he wanted to take a look at some players before the final and like most of us thought we'd beat the worse team in the premier league whatever team he put out. Sadly it backfired dreadfully and Fulham and Bournemouth are going to be tough. Our champions league qualification hangs by a thread.
As for the cup final I'm starting to regret forking out for a hotel and ticket now!

You know what’s the worst part for me - Getting infuriated at legends who gave us all and our manager not having the wisdom to move them on or keep them in bench.

Hate to shout at Bsilva or KDB or Akanji or even Walker for that matter but don’t cut it anymore, do they!

that game shows exactly how big our rebuild is and that simply the likes of MGW and various others mentioned will only cement us in a battle for top 6...

Our central midfield has zero creativity in it ...there is nothing. There are also no goals in that midfield either

Our wingers wide players dont create besides Doku and certainly never look like scoring.

Fail to address the creativity hole we have and we are in for a long season next season again....we are no where near the Scousers at present.

McAtee can be sold...he has been given quite a few chances now...I thought he had serious potential but he doesnt have attitude or fight to get to the very top.
KDB going - people saying over the last few weeks that it was mistake to let him go - proved very very wrong....
Sav - chance to do something when he came on...does very little again.

Foden - no point in playing him wide - he plays central or not at all...again drop KDB if you have to as he is done.
McAtee is a strange player, what does he give?

Foden's career is on the line at our club but that applies to nearly every player, we are a million miles off a title chasing team.

This rebuild could and will take years for me and probably require a new manager to complete.

Pathetic performance and a perfect summation of the problems we have had this season and will continue to have next season.

We created fuck all against what was the team set to be the worst in premier league history until we showed up.

injuries have masked this massive problem, whats the plan to score a goal? The only pattern we showed was clueless passing before an eventual horrendous lofted cross to nobody. we didn't have a single decent attempt first half, doku was the only source of maybe creating something second half but when the opposition know that, it's easier to crowd him out.

Foden completely anonymous once again, should have been pulled at halftime too. why isn't marmoush coming on much, much sooner? If all we are going to do is go side to side and then stick a shit ball in to nobody in particular then why aren't we at least flooding the box with the big lad and having pur better crossers sticking balls in straight away instead of wasting time?

The system is broken, it hasn't worked all season, peps had the opportunity to come up with something else going forward and he's not changed a thing. Regardless of who we sign in the window, there's no chance we are title contenders next season if this is the approach we stick with.

Well, we've been pretty wank all season and the recent winning streak was in truth a bit shaky and fortunate at times. At least we got a point, and if we are going to be lucky rather than good then hopefully it's next weekend.
This

People have failed to acknowledge how we have rode our luck in some of those wins....talk about papering over the cracks!!
