Southampton (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Absolutely and next season, there’s a lethargic approach or feel now in the majority of games,I keep saying it how do you go from scintillating football like the centurion season to the dross we are seeing at times this season ..And it’s not all down to injuries aging players..
We tried high risk football earlier in the season e.g., at home to Spurs and got cut to pieces.

We play slow possession football because we don't have Rodri and KDB is 34 next month.

Pathetic from Reuben criticising Southampton. We were the problem not them
I am officially sick of them all this season, including Pep. Ever since he came to us the teams have been playing like this, 99% of them, we (almost) always managed to find the way, or at least we really really tried hard. And he is coming out now like some whining bitch sounding so wounded and pathetic. What were they supposed to do, to come at like Sporting or PSG....well we know how it ended! Just go and applaud the away end because they came all way down to be behind you, pick up your check and shut the feck up!

McAtee is a number 10 not a wide player…..not sure Pep has ever played him in his true position.

Pep said himself that he is great between the lines….so why play him wide !
This is the gripe I have with Pep in that he thinks he can shoehorn players into positions that they were not signed for or out of their fields of technical competence or football intelligence. In reality its back to poor recruitment planning

Well the scouts are gonna have to start earning their crust over the next few weeks, what an absolute shitter of a season
And really peeing me off as Arse already seem to have their new signings lined up - Zubamedi who I rate. How are they getting business done early?

I'm dreading next week, not looking forward to CWC and have no faith for next season.

I know we have had far worse in the last 40 years, but the drop off from the Treble winning season to this is beyond belief.

I just don't know what it is....

Yeh but you can't honestly say. Not starting a make shift academy LB or Starting Marmoush over Haaland is disrespectful.

Whoever started the game today, should have been enough to get 3 points
Again, its about chemistry and fit. Theoretically, it should have been enough. But we've shown this season that we could be turgid and toothless with the wrong formation/personnel.

We've fit best when O'Reilly plays Left back and owns the line. When there are 4 central mids within interchangeable movements and parts. When the Center Back on the ball is more often Gvardiol. When Kova can move around freely to support whoever has the ball. When Nunes is looking to overlap or under lap the inside right player, when Marmoush is on the inside Left making runs. When Gonzo or Bernardo is at the base of the midfield controlling possession. When Gundo is able to seamlessly enter the space Marmoush exits when he makes a run...

Its not just those 2. Its what their presence and preferred positions does to the rest of the team and how we play.

Doku has been one of our best players in this undefeated run, yet I would not start him because his positioning upsets the balance of our best team.

You have to play your best team. And it should have included those 2 playing in their best position on the field.

We have to go back to what worked.

I'd beg anyone to go watch the Palace game again
What worked best is that personel with potentially 1 change. Haaland for McAtee

Dias whining about Southampton's tactics after the game are embarrassing.
Not sure what we expected, they were always going to play that way.
Absolutely lost all my respect for him today with those comments. The old Dias would’ve never complained about the team or ref we play against. I’m happy he’s getting rinsed on social media

World class players can play anywhere amongst the front 3 especially in a pep team.

I really wanted him to work and he showed glimpses but at the top.top level he just isn't there

Just heard Dias on the radio, WTF?!?!? Mate, they played for something the only way they knew they could get result. What did you all play for, sick and tired of winning, eh?
He should be looking at his own shit performances all season and concentrate on becoming a better centre back instead of having a pop at a team that's sitting bottom of the league defending in numbers for a point, What does he want? Southampton to come and go toe to toe and get beaten?

Truth be told, Dias wouldn't get a game with Southampton with the way he's been performing this season, It's well below the standard required!

Don't throw stones in glass houses you fucking clown.

So if you were in charge what would have been the starting 11 for today?

For me today the biggest problem was the lack of effort and urgency from the players.
It was all too comfortable.
Pep isn’t entirely blameless, Marmoush should’ve come on earlier for instance, but those players on the pitch have to do better.
Pep’s also got one eye on the final, even though he says we haven’t.
Rightly he should be able to change personnel against Southfuckinghampton.
It’s shit and boring cos everything we do recently is slow as fuck.
Fresh players needed and then we’ll see if we need fresh ideas.
Agreed except for the word "recently". We were slow and predictable for months if not years. Its been a steady decline in terms of attractive football.

It was still decent enough to win us games and competitions but it's been a long time since we've genuinely been a consistently exciting watch.

I think we all realise that but some of us are concerned about the quality of our recent signings and how quicky Rodri will get back up to speed. In respect of the Christmas signings we are going into next season not really knowing, apart from Marmoush, how good they are and whether they offer anything.
I agree. Gonzalez hasn’t made any impact whatsoever either.
It's a struggle to know where to start with this, but you do remember that Grealish was in a team that actually won the CL? As has Kovacic, albeit not for us. And both were involved in the quarter finals last season?

And you want to get rid of Reis and Khusanov, two kids with a handful of PL games between them? Yet Bobb is a plus despite managing two sub appearances due to injury?
Grealish “was” Kova “was”. What’s that got to do with now? I didn’t say get rid of Khusanov or Reis either. Bobb looked special in the games leading up to his injury so there is hope for him.

You and me both …

Waiting 3 decades between 81’ and 2011 for an FA Cup Final at Wembley, yet here we are literally fearing the worst having no idea what sort of line-up of out of form players he’ll pick?

More I think about it, the angrier I am about today. Exacerbated by Pep’s and Dias’ comments post match.

We’ve a heck of a long way to go to even compete for a PL title never mind a CL, which makes me question whether the club have decided that we’ve achieved the pinnacle so no need to strive for more.

Let’s see how many day trippers turn up if next season is the same. There’ll be loads of new season tickets available all of a sudden!

Twats.
Those comments …. I felt clinically insane. I don’t recognise my beautiful club. What do you mean my leader is blaming the other team and ref ? He sounds like an Arsenal player. What do you mean Pep thought a team with 11 points will play attacking wise and saw the issues but waited until HT ??? What’s wrong with these guys.

Embarrassing match thread and no doubt this thread will be too.

Pep put a team on the field who he thought had enough to beat Southampton, and Southampton got their tactics spot on. We just lacked a little bit of sharpness in the final third. It happens

Ref wasn't up to scratch and let them get away with spoiling tactics all game. The Ramsdale tactical time out was a joke, and Earl was rightly wound up by it. The referee also kept getting in the way of our passing lanes and slowed down our free kicks. He also seemed to be influenced by the crowd.

Absolutely fuming that VAR didn't even look at the penalty shout on O'Riley. Looked nailed on for me.
