He directed a sci fi themed episode of Castle and it was one of the most self aware things I think i've ever seen. Brilliant.

Beyond all of that, developing the capacity for mass human migration to other planets will take substantial amounts of time, energy (literally), resources, unprecedented levels of collaboration, and truly mind-boggling amounts of capital. None of that is going to be available in a world being ravaged by climate change, where most groups of people are in conflict with every other groups to hold the resources necessary to merely survive.

If you want to leave Earth, you have to first work to prevent cataclysm here.

Thing is. There’s 8bn people on the planet. There is plenty of scope to work on many problems at one time. There is literally no reason to block one area or technological advancement because there are other things to fix.

Who’s to say that the tech invented in this new space race doenst help solve some areas of climate change.

personally I think our only real solution to climate change is fusion. Which needs is to get to the moon as the fuel we need for that is rare on earth but plentiful on the moon..

When did I say we should block technological advancement?

I actually said the opposite.

My point is we have to tackle the harm we have caused here, otherwise we’ll never have the opportunity to leave earth in the first place.

And I do mean “we”, not the 1% wealthy enough to pay to leave before things degrade beyond any recovery, and we’ll just be setting up the next cycle of colonise > exploit > degrade > disaster > escape > repeat, whilst 8 billion people suffer and die in squalor.

Edit: Also meant to say my overarching point was also that Musk isn’t doing this to save the planet. Anyone that thinks that has been duped.

You basically said to give up on the idea of even trying to get to Mars as there are other issues to fix 1st.

Yeah, that was definitely not what I was saying. I was just trying to explain (in many posts) why we absolutely have to focus more of our efforts on climate change to even have a hope of advancing our space travel capabilities to the level necessary for human migration and colonisation of other planets, much less mass human habitation away from earth.

However that manifests is fine with me, but the original poster was saying fighting climate change was secondary to advancing space travel, which is just demonstratively wrong on so many levels.
