Whilst I'm in full agreement with southgates incompetence, Pep doesn't actually like players playing on the half turn, he believes it's quicker and safer to play a pass off square and have the second man play the ball forward than to turn on it themselves.

That depends on whether the player on the half turn knows what’s both sides of him. The Silva “twins” are masters of it.
