Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales | Resigns (p 34)

I don't disagree with any of that Seb, but the escalation to this point could have been avoided.

The worst thing about all of this palava, is the poor women who actually won the trophy have largely been forgotten already, when they should have been celebrated/celebrating.

I can well envisage a scenario where a proper apology and some compromise behind closed doors would have seen this largely swept under the rug. Let's face it, it looks like the Spanish FA have been doing exactly that for decades and getting away with it.

Interestingly, their house of cards is coming crashing down, not because of their misdemeanours but because of their associated hubris and lack of self-awareness. I doubt many of us would be scrutinising every action of the Spanish FA if they hadn't reacted in this way.

What started as a single indiscretion by one individual has now grown arms and legs, placing a huge microscope on the entire institution.

So maybe in a strange way, their completely myopic reaction has actually worked out in the best interests of all parties who want to see an actual reckoning.

The spirit of ‘Franco’ is alive and well in many Spanish institutions and the Spanish FA looks to be one of them. That said we can’t be too judgmental the corridors of power running English football are nothing to be proud of…. It’s reasonable to assume that the Spanish FA is in its death throws in its present incarnation and radical reform will be on its way… I just wish there was the political will to do the same here.
