Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales | Resigns (p 34)

Possibly the only sense posted on this thread.
That’s the whole point isn’t it? He shouldn’t have done it but he did and now is facing possible punishment for his actions. Actions that he’s got past form for if you’d bothered to read Sebastian’s posts before deciding this is all a storm in a teacup.
He’s a wrong’un and shouldn’t have been anywhere near the women’s team before this incident never mind afterwards.

Did any of you read my OP?

This is merely the latest in a string of problematic behaviour when it comes to the women’s team, involving pretty much everyone in the coaching staff and the FA, and Rubiales himself has a long history of accusations of sexual misconduct going back years (many that went through the courts) that the FA quietly ignored. So much so, that many players had originally refused to play in the WC unless the Spain manager and many members of his coaching staff were removed (they eventually backed down when Rubiales refused to do it).

More over, the biggest determinate of why this has blown up is the fact that he not only refused to apologise when it was made clear that his behaviour was unwelcome and highly problematic (and representative of the overall misogynistic and sexist culture the women had been enduring), he doubled down, going after all of his accusers, calling anyone criticising him “false feminists”, giving an absolutely ridiculous Francoesque speech, and promising to give the manager all the women players hate a four year contract extension.

If you can’t see why the kiss, the crotch grab, and the subsequent behaviour is emblematic of an emboldened misogynist at the helm, believing he can do whatever he wants and the women should just accept it, I am not sure what else I can tell you.

Also, regarding the question about why male players forcibly kissing other male players doesn’t garner the same reaction: because it is entirely fucking different.

The male players are colleagues, to start, unlike the topic of this thread, which was effectively a boss forcibly kissing a subordinate (in front of millions of people). And I would go so far as to say the male players in the pictures posted likely “expected” and “accepted” that behaviour from their teammates based on previous experiences far more than Hermoso would have from Rubiales.

I would also wager that many men apart from those examples don’t actually feel comfortable with that behaviour but also don’t feel comfortable speaking out against it, either privately or publicly. Absolutely no one likes to be forced in to doing something they don’t want to do, particularly in front of other people, which brings a since of humiliation to the entire affair.

And, even beyond that, the power dynamic between men and women has been and continues to be completely different, especially in Spain and this women’s team in particular. So take the discomfort of how some men feel about being forcibly kissed and multiple it by millions and you get the common experience of women.

Men have generally been able to do almost anything they want with women for thousands of years with little in the way of consequences. Barring a matriarchy here and there in the annals of history, that has never been the case for women with men.

The result of that is that men are still in far more positions of power relative to women, and still unfortunately largely enjoy a dynamic of dominance over them, even as younger men become more enlightened and aware of gender equality.

Rubiales forcibly kissing Hermoso on the lips, in front of millions of people, was a power move. He knew everything that had gone on before the WC. He knew how unhappy the women players were with the coaching staff and with him for refusing to remove them and forcing them to return to play got them in the WC. He knew that they would try again to force change after winning yhe tournament, as they would have a bigger platform and thus far more leverage. And now, even in the face of the backlash, he is indignantly and belligerently standing by his behaviour.

He was making the statement many misogynists make when they see the world changing around them and they feel their dominance may be slipping away: “I am in control; I own you ****s! Know your place!”

Like I said, this wasn’t an isolated incident, and I explained that in the OP. And it is unfortunately also representative of a deeply rooted problem in Spanish culture that we still struggle to resolve.
Great post, thanks for contextualising.

For me, i can't help but feel that this has been blown out of proportion a little. However, I have no idea how this bloke is as a person so it could be that he's a complete creep around women and if that's the case then he shouldn't be anywhere near the job.

Based on me knowing nothing about the bloke it does look like he's got far too excited about the win and kissed one of the senior members of the squad on the lips in over the top celebratory manner. His grabbing his cock gesture is a bit weird but again it's probably down to getting far too giddy about the win.

I'm not feeling there was anything other than him getting too giddy about what was a historic World Cup win for the nation he's clearly very proud of.

He should apologise to the woman involved though as it wasn't well received, although didn't she put it down to him being emotional about the win rather than anything else?

When Gundo scored the winning goal against Villa I kissed the bloke who sits in front of me. On the lips too!!! I've never done that before in my life and the only explanation I can offer is the emotion of what I'd just witnessed. My wife was stood next to me aswel and she just laughed. Should she have been offended by it? Should the bloke I kissed have been offended by it?

If so then what punishment could I have received from City had it been reported? Banned?

Without knowing the bloke it's difficult to say whether there's anything more to it than him being emotional about the World Cup win, and although it could be seen as inappropriate, I do feel that demanding he resigns is harsh based on the little I know about the man.

I will say however that I'd be angry if a bloke kissed my wife on the lips, regardless of the emotionally charged situation. I'd probably not demand that he lost his job though.
