Could be many reasons but probably an amalgam of a few.
Science was still not as popular as it was today and religion was a bit stronger. They were probably brought up with parents who bought right into the victorian era where this (mediums) was all the rage. Maybe their parents taught them with some of that having rubbed off on them.
It generally stems from the parents how a child perceives certain things. A child seeing it's mother scream at the sight of a spider for example, the child will not be to happy about spiders after that.
