Sporting CP (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

I agree with some of this but "Relentless games" is not true. Liverpool have played exactly the same amount of games. They are not in the same position as us. They do not have the same injuries as us. Nor the same ability to commit defensive suicide every game at least 3 times.
No, they're just 2 points ahead of us despite all the issues we have have all season. It is relentless, 2 games a week every week except for the international breaks, which just stretches out the season and makes it worse, and takes even more out of the players (most of whom are internationals) because of all the travelling for a pointless tin pot international competition. The big problem this creates is the lack of recovery time, especially when most of the players are paying for most of the summer. It's more or less an 11-month a year job now, so you get more injuries and it takes longer for players to recover.

Not making excuses for him as there is no need he’s playing out of position and doing well his stats back that up Yeah stupid pen but he was trying to recover and the slight pull resulted in a pirouette
Nunes was the least of our problems tonight and for those making him out the scape goat needs to look at other players who play on a regular basis who were dog shite.

An awful result, could of been a lot different if we’d of taken our chances in the first 30 minutes when we should’ve been at least 3-0 up, they were dreadful.

2nd half begins and we looked like we just got out the pub, gave a silly goal away from the kick off then our heads went.

Their first pen was soft I thought, not sure it would’ve been given in the Prem but that’s the way it goes. In a matter of minutes we go from 1-1 to 3-1, heads went and it could’ve got worse during that period of play.

We got a pen out of nowhere as the dopey ref missed the handball, Haaland misses it which I don’t think he’s ever done for us before (maybe wrong), that could’ve got us back in the game.

Once that was missed our heads went again and we concede another penalty, this one fully deserved.

Not our night, lots of injuries, thin on the ground at the moment but I feel until we get to the other side of the international break it’s not going to get any better. We look so open at the back and concede far too easily without taking our chances at the other end.

That being said, there is some hope in a few players coming back over the next few games and the way we played without conceding for the first 30 minutes.

Blue line under the game, all focus on Brighton away.

The only problem is that people cannot recognise the difference between a blip caused mostly by a severe injury list, and a crisis.
That loss tonight had nothing to do with the injury list, it was down to the fact we can't put the fucking ball in the net (or even on target), before they scored it should have been 4 or 5-0, and it wasn't like their keeper was having a worldy, he looked dreadful for 30 minutes.

3 captains on the night sort of summed up where we are at the moment

No real identity to our season, club captain clearly has major off the field problems, and isn't actually good enough to be playing every week

Of tonight's 3 captains, 2 of them came off the bench and its hard to say which one of them is closest to getting anywhere near their previous levels

Who actually is the leader of our team? Is it Walker, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Dias, Rodri, Bernardo or Stones, as I'm fairly sure all of them have been captain at some point this season. Can't think of any other side who has a different captain every single game!

Brighton is a huge game now, as we could be in serious bother going into December, when we play Liverpool and United.

I'm just not convinced it's all injury related, there looks to be something seriously wrong with the overall mentality of the team at the moment. That side put there tonight was capable of getting a result against an above average Sporting side, they certainly weren't a great side.
It could just be as simple as they’ve won 4 in a row and finding it hard to get the real hunger.

Lots of issues all over the pitch but if we didn't have a team of non scorers and could finish the problems would be far less acute.

I also have to be honest I've never been a fan of this side to side stuff but surely its coming to the end of its shelf life, it seems doomed to end in a catastrophic breakdown and s getting quite tedious.as its so ineffectual.

Pep’s interviews recently remind me of when he went at the team after Spurs in 22/23. He’s trying to get a reaction.

From saying Haaland can get a break during internationals if he needs one to insinuating some players aren’t going through the pain barrier or admitting to getting pissed off at NT injuries and that we pay the wages.

He sounds pissed off. And rightly so.

He’d be better off starting himself in midfield at the minute ; )

The shit squad building was waiting to bite us in the arse and here we finally are!

How the fuck do we have some 30 year olds minding our midfield when it’s the most important part of Guardiola’s team.

Even Kloop manage to replace the old farts with Maclister Gaverbarch Curtis Jones and as such. They ain’t Rodri or KDB but atleast they can run and cover spaces.

Awful squad building and a tough job for the next guy.

Looking at the BBC report is odd - they say we were well thrashed yet we had 20 shots, 72% possession & 11 corners to 1 - that tells me we still do certain things very well - we just need to find a solution to stopping teams constantly having 3 v 2 on breaks and counters. We gave away 2 stupid pens tonight because we got caught on the wrong side - we need to pick our best 4 fit defenders and start from there.

I guess we will be fine but the game at the weekend has become very important now.
And tweek that High Line a good bit

Can we please stop saying Nunes is ok and making excuses for him.

The man is absolutely wank. How can there be so many of you who just won’t have it?.
I wouldn't like to go that far with a City player, but you are absolutely spot on ;-)

A terrible signing, on a par with Philips but unfortunately he has to play as we have no one else.

Having said that, he'd be nowhere near the starting 11 Saturday for me

The first one was definitely a penalty and the second one is more likely to be given in a European game than not

The blame lies on both guardiol and Nunes both gave the ball away and needed to be calmer as neither player was going to score from where they were fouled
I've only seen one quick replay of the first one, second one was very soft, there was more contact with the tug on Savinho (I think it was), in the first half. I doubt if any of the three pens would have been given in a Prem match.

We went 34 years without winning anything…… I think the old guard City fans will cope with this current blip. More recent fans sound like they need counselling after this trauma.

Not completely sure about that. I think some of the cry babies on hear tonight are as old as me and I’m nearly 60!

It’s as if the last few years never happened and we’re still crap!

Agree with most of this except the bit about Haaland. He had more than enough chances to have hit a hat trick tonight, besides the penalty. He was not good enough today..

And he will know that, and no doubt be really upset with his performance.
