1971 Alvechurch played Oxford United in the final qualifying round, before the first round proper. Five replays, four went to extra time. They played each other 6 times in 3 weeks, Alvechurch winning the sixth game on the Thursday before they played Aldershot in the first round two days later.
They played. Saturday, Tuesday, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, Monday, then played Aldershot on the Wednesday. All the players had full time jobs as well!

Im guessing Aldershot won?!

The number of cup matches in a season factoring in the replays must have been immense.

Aye, not to mention that the second replay was at St Andrews in mid week.

Can you imagine traveling to Birmingham in mid week, for the second replay of a League Cup tie?

The season before we'd played Newcastle three times in the 5th round of the F.A. Cup.

42,000 turned up for the second replay in mid week at Elland Road:

1979/80 we played Arsenal over 4 matches in FA Cup semi final and lost, we also played them in between in league. 5 matches 20 days.

An FA Cup tie between Arsenal and Sheff Wed in the late 70's took 5 matches (4 replays) before Arsenal finally won

The last 3 replays were played at Leicester if I remember correctly

These were the days when the FA Cup was the best cup competition in the world and winning it meant much much more to players than winning the league

Pedant alert, but it's a different Gordon Smith from the one who later played for us (they were both Scots, though, and were born within a few months of one another).

This is the guy who was at Villa: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Smith_(footballer,_born_July_1954)

And this is the former Rangers, Brighton and City player: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Smith_(footballer,_born_December_1954)
