The game against Anfield was the only fixture over the past week where I have felt we have let ourselves down. We collapsed in exactly the same manner we did in the PL and ended up with a similar result.
That said, for all of the talk about how brilliant Liverpool were in the 1st half an Anfield, we were equally as good, if not better, in the first half at the Etihad. The difference is that they got all of the big breaks with the referee which resulted in goals. Ignoring any controversial decisions like the non-award of the Sterling penalties, there is no denying that Salah's goal was offside and that Sane's should have stood. Therefore, meaning that both us and Liverpool should have been going into half time with a 2-0 lead. However, due to nothing but sheer incompetence Liverpool benefitted from a 2 goal swing.
In regards to United we played them off the park and aside from a piss poor 10 minute spell where they scored 3, we battered them. Just look at the following facts about that game and then tell me with a straight face that they are nearly at our level:
Ulitimately the only result that matters in the 2-3 scoreline. But based on the whole 90 minute performance we are streets ahead of them and we'll show it again next season.
- They had a full weeks rest and we didn't
- It was there strongest squad available and we rested key players
- We hit the woodwork twice
- We should have had two stone wall penalties and they should have been down to 10 men
- They scored 3 goals from 4 shots on target.
- We missed 5 clear sitters
Great post. Bar the Klanfield game we were in control and were unfortunate with the poor referreeing.
