Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

If Marmoush scores 1 on 1, if Haaland scores when their keep made a mistake. We were not good, and I wasn't keen on the line up before the game - but for a couple of mistakes and a couple of missed opportunities the result could look a lot different.

We were not as bad as people claim yesterday and we were not as good as people claim when we beat Wolves. Its fine margins, yesterday they went against us.

Too many chiefs, not enough Indians.

Cherki is too laid back at this stage for a game against someone like Spurs, he was one name too much out of the top six.

Reijndeers, again, the pace of the game is too quick for him right now, he stood too high in the pockets and Spurs just blocked the lanes.

Gonzales is a worry, he is needed as the six, but he's not very good recieving the ball with his back to the play, so Trafford was forced to punt long with no out ball.

The most worrying aspect was how physically dominated City were?

From a strength on the ball issue, right through to not completing tackles and coming out with the ball.

Rico will never be good enough, he's clearly being asked to be more aggressive higher up the pitch, but all it did was force Stones to keep coming out of the middle to cover the right full-back area.

I'd like to see O'Reilly be given a proper go in the middle and utilise his size and goalscoring knack.

We have some very difficult games in this period and I fear we could be out of it before it even starts, if we were ever in it in the first place.

Whatever money now left, you sign a right-back, Donnarumma and players such as Baleba and Gheui.

If there is owt left, then sign Rodrygo.

Sadly, the club have tried to be too clever again maximising prices for players who are past it or were never good enough.

Happy Sunday!!

Thoughts on Trafford: he did really well last week, I felt that the defence had confidence in him, although I'd still take Ederson at the moment.

Yesterday, though, that second goal? A keeper needs to have proper character, to rule his area. For example, if he needs to clatter through his own defence to reach the ball, then he should have the confidence to do it.

That same character should also give him the balls to just put his foot through the ball when necessary, irrespective of what he's been coached to do.

The fact that he had the best view of anybody, yet still chose the suicide pass suggests to me that either he's terrified of Pep, or in such awe of him that he'll do whatever he's told, regardless.

Neither makes a top keeper, in my opinion.
He went to pieces after the goal.

Not sure if I was just imagining it but before the game I said to my son that it looked like we'd narrowed the pitch quite significantly which I thought was odd as we usually like to use the full width to make space through the lines.
I also then noticed that the play seemed congested and we were playing very narrow which allowed Spurs to close down all the spaces. Does anyone know if this was the case and we've altered the pitch dimensions because if so then this is a huge tactical change which will take a while to get right and embed?
I said the exact same thing about the pitch seeming narrower so I'm glad I'm not going crazy. There was a period of play in the first half when a dozen or so passes went just out of play in about 10 minutes.

The Pep playing out from the back Russian roulette didn’t work last season and it won’t work this season either. The game has moved on and we haven’t, we will get handsome wins against the mid and lower table teams, occasional wins against the big teams, but don’t expect anything more than a place in the scramble for Europe. If the chairman and chief execs are ok with that then little we can do. The support Pep was demanding yesterday won’t happen when fans are watching the same mistakes every single game.

Lewis went to sleep really for the first. The Spurs winger was a good few yards behind him when Stones slipped yet got there well ahead of Lewis (who also went with the wrong foot IMO). He needs to be more aware of where his man is.
Yes he made his mistakes but wasn’t the only one. He did however cover a lot of ground making up for others - take that header that prevented a third for example. Ok Lewis made a mistake that contributed to conceding but let’s not forget marmoush made at least 2 and Haaland at least one error that led to us not scoring. Sorry I hate seeing one of our own singled out when there are others not getting the pelters for there contributions too

Against Wolves we only needed to play in moments. It was enough to win. Spurs under Frank are going to be a top 4 side imo. I missed the first 20 minutes and haven't seen the Marmoush chance. When I got in, we looked well on top, and then the goal went in, and from that moment, SPurs controlled the game and we couldn't touch them. They won easily. It was worse than the 0-4 for me because in the 0-4 we missed a lot of chances, and we also had obvious players missing. In this game, there's Rodri and Kovacic who are out. Should their absence have made such a big difference?

Great picture, launch it anywhere on the left hand side and Marmoush and Haaland have a good chance of being clean through.

Maybe that's a good lesson for him to learn today.. Dias and Stones were too slow in the buildup and Spurs, yes Spurs were causing all sorts of problems.
The time for learning lessons is over. He could watch countless games from last season and learned a thing or two.

Just had another look at the highlights on YT after a night to sleep on it, to see if I could find any redeeming features for Trafford in that second goal.

Nope. I really don't know what he was thinking of, passing to a team mate (Gonzalez, wasn't it?) who had a Spurs player breathing down his neck. Stick it in row Z.
But that’s the idea of the plan, to open up the midfield. He just didn’t spot Cherki in acres of space but that doesn’t really matter, the keeper has to still find someone AND expect the ball back. Booting it into row Z defeats the object. You could argue Nico shouldn’t be yet trying to come so close until Trafford is more comfortable.

We are miles away competing for the PL again.

Never mind the CL.

Zero pace at the back with a ridiculous high line.

No bite in midfield and toothless and clueless up front.

Even when spurs gifted us a cock up in their own box, we fluffed it.

Least we can reflect on the trebles and the quads, as I fear they will soon be a distant memory in the coming seasons.

Just had a look at one of the pictures someone posted from behind the goal and you can see the line is now over what was pitch last season by the different shades. Probably done to help Silva like Kendall did for Peter Reid back in the day.

No team can perpetually stay at the level we were, so this situation was always going to happen. It’ll always feel too soon.

I’ll personally never forget the good times, the memories won’t fade.

Keep the faith, blue!

Spend well, here lies the problem. We haven’t spent well for quite a while, out of the new signings in the last 2;windows, 2 were brought off today and 2 were nowhere near the starting line up
£60m on two young defenders in Jan... one of which is now out on loan and the other has been outcast since March.

A further £30m on a now back up keeper this summer and £90m has been frittered away whilst we still have no able right back at the club.

We all knew how key Walkers recovery pace was to allow us to play a high line, so why the fuck don't those in charge know it too?

Same mate, the glory years are over. We enjoyed it and probably took it for granted. The club will need to take a different direction post Pep and that will take time.

Trafford just needed to drill it towards Marmoush
His actual goalkeeping was good though. Donnarumma doesn't improve matters. If City see Trafford as a no.2, and Ederson is defo off, go and get Costa
