Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Don't get your point. Our squad was decimated last season and it was a miracle we finished 3rd. Lewis and Nunes are both midfielders and are playing at right back , a position where a player really needs to be sharp more than skilful. Stones hardly played a game, Dias had very little playing time and Gvardiol was voted player of the year.
If a teams total way of playing is altered by a keeper unable to play a system we've played for a decade, well, we're going to have problems.
In my opinion this whole keeper must be good with his feet thing is snake oil. Provided he has a modicum of intelligence he doesn’t need to be a magician, just keep it simple. If what I checked online is accurate, Ederson has assisted seven goals and made mistakes that have led to five goals in his time at City, we haven’t won things cos of his feet, arguably his best ever performance was when he saved our bacon in the CL final with a string of top saves. when all said and done a keeper is there to save and dominate the area, anything else is just fluff.

How can punting the ball up the pitch give our defence some respite ?? If the opposition gain control of the ball and come straight back on the attack ?????
If the opponents have pushed right up to your half way line and from a goal kick you fire it behind them, it ain’t coming straight back at you.

Trafford is and was signed back as a goal keeper, his kicking and decision making today was dreadful
Well obviously he's not ready for the Beckenbauer roll just yet. With the ridiculous defending we seen last season and at the CWC you would think taking a goal kick could be simplified. Maybe just launch it up field directly towards Haaland and give him something to do.

Persobally I think Trafford will learn froM his mistake. It will be a long time before we see that again.
Trafford needs to learn not to take a touch every time he receives the ball inviting trouble. Not helped by midfield making themselves available although he wasn't always in tune with defenders so got pegged back and bottled in whereas Ederson would pass through the press to set up an attack.

We're talking about Man City here, not Grimsby. So you think City start launching the ball straight through to the opposition keeper as a tactical improvement ? 1st of all you've lost possession, 2nd you are going to make your team mates and the fans very frustrated. 3rd not having possession and chasing the opposition takes more energy and eventually the stadium will be empty !!! Then you "WILL" have the ball coming straight back at you, with an empty stadium. Then how do you score without the ball ?
You wouldn't see teams on Hough End playing football like that !!!

Iv waited till Iv had chance to calm down and reflect properly on yesterday.

For me we looked like a team that hasn’t had a pre season, The spurs press was brilliant and well organised, however it was made even better by how loose our passing was and how unsure we were about where players were going to be.

They do so much work on passing to the player in a way that means he can receive protect and then play which was all off yesterday. It meant every pass forced a bad pass followed by a bad touch followed by us ending up trapped by the touch line.

I saw plenty of positives though, Bobb was Good, stones looked fitter than we’ve seen in 2 years and though both was poor overall reindjers and cherki showed flashes of what they can do.
Also thought Haaland worked so much harder than he did all last season.

Im not getting carried away as I can’t remember a pep side ever starting a season well, even the 100 points we drew with Everton in the first home game.

For me last year has given me even more confidence in pep, he had a poor squad, savaged by injuries and still managed to collect the most points in the league after Xmas.

We will start slow, pep will work out how this team needs to play to win and then we will come good.

Edersons goal assists have nothing to do with it, or even how many saves he makes. It's about a style of football starting from your goalkeeper. By retaining the ball with crisp neat passing from the keeper and defenders, enticing the opposition onto them , making moves and passing through the opposition press. This opens the pitch up for our midfield and attack to move into. This is how we have played since Pep arrived 10 years ago and this style is now played all over the world and has turned our club into football giants and breaking nearly every football record in this country
But all this seems to be "just fluff" to you.
You may get your wish Norbert, to go back to playing pre historic football. But I doubt it.

Mate, it’s horses for courses. Playing out from the back yesterday was a horror show. Just like last season. I’m not saying go route one crazy gang, I’m saying when you are 1-0 down then don’t fuck about in your own box especially from goal kicks.

Clutching at straws. Both teams play on the same pitch. They were stronger. Didn’t play at snails pace. Took their gifts well.trafford needs to think a bit quicker and defence needs to be smarter.too predictable. Haaland needs to work on his heading and link up play.in hindsight maybe pep shouldn’t have changed his starting line up as cherki and marmoush had poor games.
Clutching at nothing! Just answering a question about turning an ankle versus blocking a tackle!

The rest, I’ve already agreed to in other posts.

Which takes me back to my 1st comment. Trafford is not up to it ! if he is to be number one keeper we are in for a difficult season.

“arguably his best ever performance was when he saved our bacon in the CL final with a string of top saves.”

Let’s please put this to bed: none of those were anything but average saves that any half - decent keeper would keep out. He’s been an absolutely brilliant keeper but this mythical nonsense is just that - nonsense.

Ederson made the same mistake Traff did against spurs at least twice resulting in goals. He also rushes out and cost us goals a fair few times. A cl final springs to mind. Ederson made them mistakes whilst being the best sweeper keeper about, to think Traff or anyone else won’t make them mistakes is deluded

I got pelters for pointing this out. Not one save out of the ordinary. He set the bar so low on making great saves that people believe saving average shots at goal are bigger than what they are.

To be fair, though, those stats ignore the 99% of other occasions where we retained possession (but that didn't either result in an Ederson assist or a goal conceded). Can't quantify, but shouldn't underestimate the benefit of that, week in, week out.

2nd time today....

We managed without a LB because Delph and Zinchenko had some sort of defensive knowledge, were better passers and the rest of the team were top quality. We had legs in midfield which was world class, we had world class defenders, wingers who would score for fun and creators all over the place. We have none of that because the recruitment has been horrendous.
What a team we had those seasons, 2017/18 & 18/19. Quite brilliant football played. My memory goes back to the time when David Silvia’s baby was born prematurely and was so poorly. That man played out of his skin for us during that time, when his mind was elsewhere. Amazing, I remember we beat Arsenal in the final of the League cup 1-0 then the next match we played them at the Emirates. Totally played them off the pitch that night with Silva bossing the midfield completely. What a team and what a player.
I know you say about recruitment but I don’t think there are players out there that are near the calibre of Silva, Yaya, KDB, Kompany etc.
