Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

We were much better than people are talking about in the first hour of the game. Even our build up is fine for a large portion of that period before Bernardo comes on. We go long and create chances, and we play through the lines and create chances.

Spurs were more aggressive than us in moments, but that felt like a fitness/rhythm thing to me. When Bernardo came on the team got demonstrably worse because he lost three or four duels and gave the ball away. Team didn't really recover until Pep brought Foden on and shifted Bernardo out to the right wing.

That same team that started on Saturday will take someone apart big time in the next couple of months. They're really not that far away. People talking about pace and high lines just feels like the same boring cliches we've had throughout Pep's time at City.
Agree we looked pretty good initially ……the turning points, the injury to Ait Nouri and obviously the first goal.

Was really pleased with the starting line up, although Marmoush is not good enough plus the set up left us outnumbered in midfield with Reeinders sometimes playing as a second number 10.

We have somehow got to get/keep Cherki in the starting 11…….he is by far the most creative option we have.

It’s why Pep gets paid big bucks to sort out the conundrum.

We got worse after Cherki went off. Pep will have noticed that. Think Marmoush needs to settle down a little bit and remember that he can pass the ball. Him and Reijnders were a little too rushed in every action yesterday and Marmoush in particular made a couple of really bad decisions in key moments. But I like him a lot as a player.

so its wank if we lose and good if we win, right?
It’s wank if it’s wank mate.

I was very vocal that early last season when we were getting results it was wank and we were miles off it. I got laughed at. Look how it turned out.

I was again in the minority last week when I said not to get carried away re the Wolves result. I described Wolves as wank, because they were/are.

Saturday was wank it’s that simple.

That’s not to say it will stay that way. It’s early, there is plenty of time to gel and produce much, much better performances. I’m very hopeful we will.

But to deny that Saturday was anything but wank is silly.

To be honest though, I did think the performance was wank. We looked physically miles off it, Spurs bullied us all over the pitch and we didn't sustain attacks or create anywhere near enough. We lacked bravery in the midfield and played a high line that was always going to be susceptible to a team with Kudus and Johnson in it, particularly when you're playing Rico Lewis who's just not good enough.

Rewatching the game highlighted to me just how poor the midfield was. Nobody was brave and the right hand side looked like it had a massive lack of physicality. In the second half when we were chasing the game we barely created a meaningful chance.

That keystone cops goal on half time killed the crowd and the team. Just played out a training game 2nd half and accepted defeat. Our horrific record against the big boys the last two seasons shows we are not elite anymore

For the life of me I couldn’t remember any other goal other than Sergio’s in that match. Funnily enough, I remember more Kompany outstripping Aubemeyang when Arsenal were on the attack at 0-0. My heart was in my mouth at the time. This morning I thought long and hard and then Kompany’s goal came to me. I’m going to get the match up later to refresh my memory. It’s funny how I seem to remember the away fixture in the next match better than the final.
I’m inclined to agree with you about fingers crossed for improvement. It’s going to be an interesting season ahead that’s for certain.
Yes I recall the Aubamyang incident, it was after about 5-10 minutes in. Serg scored from a long Bravo punt, Vinnie scored the second and had told Carla that he was going to score that day. The Arse AWAY game was later that week when shedloads of our lads and lassies braved the snow for the 200 mile journey, whilst those soft fair weather Tarquins stayed at home. How I would love to humiliate them again, but sadly I fear those days are long gone.

I think it was Fulham and Brentford at home last season relatively early doors where we won but it was very iffy. The implosion followed soon after in late Autumn. Like you say, too early to call it but we could really do with shaking that shite from Sat out of our system.

Not for one minute do I think it’d have changed the result, as you could easily argue about the Trafford non-sending off being an awful mistake too, but I’ve just seen ref watch and for the first time seen the penalty not being given for VDV on Bobb as it was opposite end of the ground from where I sit. I just want to know, other than the obvious plays in blue & it’s City, why VAR did not get involved and give the decision? It’s just plain wrong and this is exactly the kind of incident that we should be kicking up a fuss about and requesting an explanation.

We’ve seen Arsenal get a pen for less contact, and ffs they were 4-0 up at the time.

It’s just not acceptable or good enough and I don’t understand why we don’t highlight these inconsistencies and call out the piss poor double standard refereeing.

We been undercooked, Tottenham been much better fitness wise and its understentable, they played super cup, had all the preseason to prepare very well.

We should be much closer to our optimal fitness and match sharpness after the international break, meaning for the United and Arsenal games. All the hope is that we outsmart Brighton and take 3 points.

I watched the game again, once the dust had settled, calmly, now my reservations:
1) unfortunately Nico been so off it. Positioning, awareness, spotting the threat. Im sorry Nico, but you are my main culprit hear. For Nico's defence - point 2 below,
2) Cherki + Reijnders in the middle gonna be a rare picture against top teams, until at least Rodri gets to his old best, because we need there a bit more of the legs and defensive solidity. Reijnders was disjointed with Nico and left Nico alone too often,
3) I love Bobb, but thought he could press a little harder at times, while Cherki pressed the goalkeeper incorrectly; he should have cut off the passing channel to the fullback, but instead he ran directly at the goalkeeper.
4) Rico still needs to keep developing, including athletically. He’s good enough for half of the Premier League teams, which is a huge achievement, but to compete with top teams and players, he has to be better.

Generally all players below par, for me maybe Dias and Haaland deserves the shout. Marmoush fought well, but just must hit the net out of three decent chances at least once. Would be 1-0 and the story of the game could have been entirely different

Utter nonsense, It was the worst we've played since the Alan Ball era and as much as you'd like to sugar coat it, that is the brutal truth. But keep posting positives and accept a 7th to 10th placed finish if you like.

Yeah, sorry mate. I am by all accounts a happy clapping head in the sand Pep apologist around these parts. So stands to reason that I'd be blind to such a woeful performance and our obvious slide into mid table mediocrity!

The sky is falling!

I’ve watched the whole game again just to sense check my feeling walking out of the stadium

We were decent in the first 25 -30 mins and much the better side

We created two very good chances during this period and should have been leading before their goal

We created other numerous good openings but poor decision making cost us , I think this was the clearest indicator of the team not gelling with each other due to many new faces in the team at once

Reijnders was most guilty of this where he was trying too hard to pull off something rather than keeping it simple and finding his man and playing himself into the match. I think he was believing the hype from last week too much

Cherki was playing too deep a lot of the time and trying to start attacks , this meant we didn’t have enough support around Haaland - was this by design, this is a role Bernardo would normally fill but Cherki has more to offer between the lines

Our press was off most of the first half, Spurs back two were playing round Haaland so Bobb was instructed to press in a two, but Lewis wasn’t brave enough in the press onto Spence so they kept getting out down their right hand side. I think this also highlights the issue with Cherki in the middle as he should have been the natural player to join Haaland in a 442 off ball shape . Bernardo would have sorted this issue out better if he was on the pitch to organise the team.

Spurs score their goals and confidence tilted towards them which we struggled to get back

We started well second half but visibly wilted after missing that sitter following Bobb robbing Van der Ven

The rest of the second half , Spurs sat on their lead and we huffed and puffed to no effect , a few hairy moments with Trafford and Dias as well!

Rodri and Foden made a massive difference when they were on , which bodes well for the next few weeks

I think Pep was caught out by Frank’s selection , with all the pre game analysis centred around him parking the bus in a 532 , he did the opposite and went aggressive with a 424 high press

This must have been his thinking with playing Cherki in midfield which in hindsight was a mistake

Although , We score first and it’s a different game

If we can get this team on the pitch against Arsenal , then I think we’ll match them

Ederson

Lewis Stones Gvardiol Ait Nouri

Rodri

Bernardo Reijnders

Foden Haaland Marmoush
