This is so true, the classic case being Howard Kendall & Everton back in the day.

In fact, has there ever been a manager who has done pretty well at a club, moved away, then returned and done even better the second time around, in the history of the game...? I can't recall any.

Subjective. Moyes kept them up which at that time was probably seen as doing a decent job. This year he has done very well.
