Spurs thread 2020/21

As much as I dislike Spurs, it's ridiculous that they're having to play tonight and Thursday. Shame really, as it could've been a decent game against Chelsea but presumably they'll have to throw it now.
I will set up an agenda thread tonight mate!!

With Jose's comments it sounds like this won't be a priority at all. I can see Frank playing some youngsters as well

Seriously? Crowing about "VAR, my lord" after the ridiculous calls at our place (the clear Llorente handball in THAT CL game, and the daft handball call on Laporte plus Lamela's rugby tackle on Rodri, both in the Desmond at the start of last season). Unlike you, we haven't forgotten.

VAR, My Lord was banter. Nothing more. The spontaneous exhalation of relief for having got away with a wholly undeserved point. It’s the kind of off the cuff chant that every set of away fans in the country has come up with at some point - including City’s, I’m sure. Incredibly annoying for home fans in the moment, of course, but it isn’t meant to be taken as a serious commentary on VAR. As I’m sure most City fans realise.

As to the Llorente handball, Spurs and City fans have done that discussion to death. We will likely never agree on it. You say that it was a clear handball and should have been disallowed. We say that the ball came through a crowd of players and and glanced off his arm before hitting his thigh and going into the net. It was entirely accidental. His arm couldn’t possibly have been more in front of or closer to his body. The handball rules at the time only directed that goals scored directly from the hand / arm should be disallowed; or if there was a deliberate handball or a handball from an arm in an unnatural position in the immediate build up to the goal. None of these applied in the instance of Llorente’s goal. And given that Llorente was no more than two yards from the goal at the time of scoring, there is every chance that the glance off the arm made no difference to the eventual outcome anyway.

I don’t doubt that you will dispute all of the above. And I get that. Neither set of fans is for budging on the issue, I guess.

Spurs have had countless VAR decisions or non decisions go against us - including in the CL final that season. There is a table which shows that, in the Premier League, Spurs have a bigger VAR deficit than any other club - minus 12. City are next worst on minus 11. It’ll come as no surprise to you that Utd have the biggest surplus - plus 17.

So this notion that seems to have taken hold on BM - that Spurs are a favoured team who always get decisions their way - is demonstrably wrong. And it does no good to be forever harking back to past injustices. Whatever next.....Spurs fans citing Mario Balotelli’s stamp on Scott Parker’s head before he scored the winning penalty in a game between two teams vying for the title at the time? ;-)

You say Llorente's handball was accidental. Maybe, maybe not. But let's say, for argument's sake, that it was. Laporte's handball that led to Gabby's late strike a few short months (including close season) was also accidental. But the goal was chalked off. Llorente's wasn't. As for your claim that the VAR song was "banter"; yeah, absolutely hilarious, it was.

Having only played on Sunday. Three games in four and a half days!

The rules changed from one season to the next. Had the Laporte incident happened the previous season, your goal would have stood. That’s not to say that I don’t sympathise with your opinion about that Laporte decision.

And no, there is no maybe about the ball hitting Llorente’s arm being accidental. It was clearly accidental.

As to the banter - yeah, it was a bit shit. But that’s what rival fans do, isn’t it? Taunt each other. City fans included. Let’s not pretend otherwise. It’s not something to take to heart and allow to rankle for years after.

Not sure where I said that other fans, ours included, don't taunt rival fans.

I’m up to the fourth episode of their documentary.

The Belgians and Son (despite being astonished by his red after his shocking ‘challenge’ against Chelsea) come across well. But Alli is unsurprisingly a complete tool.

Could be overreacting a bit to the United game and they have already dropped a few points.

But does anyone else think these could challenge for the title? Kane and Son are two of the very best in the league and in the last few weeks they’ve added some real quality with Reguilon and Bale. Ndombele is looking like he’s fulfilling his promise in recent games and Hojbjerg looks a solid buy. I think they could be dark horses.
