Spurs vs City post match

Fernando, Navas, Zabaleta all starting. Too many players who simply aren't good enough for where we need to be.

Why are Gundogan and Sane (£70 million of talent) on the bench in a big game only for Fernando and Navas to start? Spending £50 million on Sane to start Navas ahead of him is bizarre IMO. We'd be laughing at United if they did that.

Our top players are the best in the country, but we still have so many average players in the squad. Also, we're nowhere near as good without KDB - same as last season. Full backs not good enough, only have two CBs good enough, not sure centre midfield is that great either. Is Silva really good enough to be a centre midfielder in such a physical league? I'm not sure.

Sensible not to start Gundogan 3 times in 8 days after the long layoff.

Agree with Navas though. Not only is he unproductive but it puts Sterling in a way worse position. Between that, the midfield and our fullbacks, we were defeated from the off.

They made 2 changes from Tuesday, how many did we make? Moscow away is never an easy game, how did we get on their a couple of seasons ago?
It was an easy game for them. I watched it. Totally different to our game v Celtic. Even when City were a joke in Europe we should have beaten CSKA Moscow with our eyes shut. You are referring to the era when when we used to beat ourselves up in Europe.

You seriously think that given a level playing field Spurs are better than us?

The question remains: How is pep going to tear the "Typical city" part of our identity out? That's the only way he'll reach the heights he should do

Ok. But, I couldn't see anything in our play today that was better than what Pellegrini did last year against Tottenham.

But that was near enough Pellegrinis team and I'm sure that the management team will have learnt a hell of a lot from that game. I do hope they have.

I thought Sagna and Clichy were nailed on to start today. We probably wont do it, but 3 at the back looks tempting because the full backs are weak.

I thought they would as well, especially Sagna. Not sure we have the players for wing back roles. Angelino would do well there but too early for him to start. Sterling and Navas are weak defensively, Sane switches off too easily. Nolito could do a job there maybe.

The bit I don't really understand is......

Last season we "all" openly admitted that we had a very poor defence, which showed itself many times with some really poor defensive displays:

Zaba Legend, but well past his sell by date sadly

Otta Committed, maybe able, but dives in far too often

Vinny Too often injured, maybe it's over for one of my all time favourite City players

Kolarov Oh dear

Joe Distribution his only slight weakness in my opinion, amazing shot stopper (is Bravo really a step up, I don't think so)

Sagna, Clichy beyond their best years.

"It will all change when Pep gets here"...... Looked very much like our team of C. 18 months ago today if you ask me.

Still top of the league, but I don't think we have the personnel yet for a major title challenge.

Disappointing, tone set in the first 10 minutes with sloppiness at the back. Kolarov is a shambles of a defender, it's slightly different when you are pinging passes at home v Bournemouth when we're 3 up to the relative cauldrons at Celtic Park & WHL. Surprised that Pep hasn't sussed him out yet, appalling defender.
They pushed, harried, pressed, bullied (and fouled) us throughout the 90 minutes and were so much stronger looking than us....we do seem to lack a physical presence in midfield and up front.
I'm now not looking forward to Barca away, our defence is still a potential H-Bomb. Spurs are effin tight at the the back, hard as nails and solid...the sort of defence that wins titles....ours, by comparison, is very much hit and miss.not sorting out proper full backs in the summer will cost us this season

yes but anyone over a certain age would never praise them fkrs. Too much pain.

forget 81'........looking to the past invariably means pain and in football it means nothing...only the dippers and the red scum concentrate on that...what matters is the hear and now and today we played a team who were always going to employ the tactics they did and everyone knew it would work especially when we saw the line up....they played well and to their strengths which out did ours especially with he players that we had missing (though they had dembele and kane missing as well)

i think they have a bit more strength in depth as I don't think Kolorov, zabba, fernando and navas are good enough (anywhere near). You could also add Sane into that at present as he looks terrified and nowhere near committed enough when he is on the pitch - he gets a pass however at the moment as he is a young player and he may need a season to settle (hopefully it is just that)

Not sure it has anything to do with the manager. Certain players have no character and go missing when we fall behind. How many games since over the last 3 seasons have we got wins from losing positions?
We came back against Celtic just a few days back three times. That is definitely character. I am not going to get into stats, but I have seen enough commitment and character from our team in most of the matches to go and start questioning everything today.

Dier did make the bench, but Wanyama and Alli were mint and wouldn't even be sure who they would drop for both of them when Dembele comes back.

Exactly, they got injures and the squad player came in and made a difference. Not sure you can say the same for Navas and Fernando but you may have a different opinion?

Ok. But, I couldn't see anything in our play today that was better than what Pellegrini did last year against Tottenham.
Despite the bad decisions in last years game at Spurs we didn't deserve to win it. Like it or not, they're a good side and they're even better this year. It hurts when you have to admit you were beaten by a better side but it happened today. It's just another step in the learning process, and what matters now is what we do next. We have a decent run of fixtures coming up. If we string another sequence together we'll be sitting pretty. We didn't learn anything last year, just kept repeating the same mistakes. I'm convinced that won't happen under Pep. He'll be starting to realise that the prem is a very different animal.

agree with all of that except Sagna .....think he fits peps system well

I wonder if the non sale of yaya and kolorov not going anywhere hampered us in the transfer market?????

I know, I know, but it was a question about the lightness of Barca midfield in comparison to ours.
So is our midfield too light not heavy enough? it did work against the scum, why not today.
Perhaps the KDB factor?

Our midfield got bypassed today. We need to play our own game instead of putting Fernando into the team. I'd rather go down fighting rather than conceding the game before the kick off with our defensive looking team.
