I can only assume that these days the only reason to keep numbers per player is so that "businesses/media" know where they stand - e.g. shirts can be sold with the right number or games can have the right info. From a football officiating perspective surely it can be adjusted as required.
Just silly to have no No1 at a club because a player had it for a few games. Silly rules...oh that sounds right for football these days.
